Assigning products to product bundles

If you changed the licensing model and some of your already classified products are now a part of a product bundle, such as a Cloud Pak, you can easily assign all relevant products and their components to the proper bundle. It improves software tracking and calculating utilization of license metrics by product bundles.

Before you begin

An icon representing a user. You must have the Manage Software Classification permission to view the Software Classification panel and classify software. To view some additional columns related to computers on which the components are installed, you also need the View Endpoints permission.

About this task

Use this procedure if you changed the licensing model and some of your already classified products are now a part of a product bundle. If you are classifying software from scratch, it is better to use a different approach. For more information, see: Assigning components to products and product bundles.
Important: Software classification actions are not applied from the moment when they are performed. They affect the entire licensing history. For example, if a component is detected in January, and then it is reassigned to a different product or the product metric is changed in May, the change affects the component from January. The change is visible after you click Recalculate on the All Metrics report or after the next import of data completes.

Procedure

  1. In the top navigation bar, hover over Reports, and click Software Classification.
  2. Select the product instance that you want to assign to the product bundle.
  3. Verify what license metric should be assigned to the product and reassign the metric if needed.
    1. Verify what license metric should be assigned to the product according to the License Agreement.

For example, to classify IBM WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment as part of the IBM Cloud Pak for Applications, WebSphere Application Server should be assigned the Virtual Processor Core (VPC) license metric as stated in the License Information document. By default, License Metric Tool assigns IBM WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment with the PVU metric. To assign the product to IBM Cloud Pak for Applications, you need to change the product metric from PVU to VPC.

    2. If the instance of the product that you want to assign to a Cloud Pak reports a different license metric than specified in the license agreement, perform the following steps:
  4. Hover over Classify (or Assign in application update 9.2.39 and earlier), and click Product Bundle (or FlexPoint or Cloud Pak Bundle, or Cloud Pak or FlexPoint Bundle depending on your version of License Metric Tool).
  5. Select the bundle to which you want to assign the product, and click Assign.

Results

Information about the product bundle to which the product is assigned is displayed in the Product Bundle column.

What to do next

To view utilization of license metrics by the product bundle, go to Reports > Product Bundles (or FlexPoints and Cloud Paks depending on your version of License Metric Tool). Click Recalculate to refresh the data on the report.

If you assigned the product to a Cloud Pak, the report shows information only about non-containerized products that are a part of the Cloud Pak. For information about viewing the overall utilization of the license metric by the Cloud Pak, see: Licensing of non-containerized Cloud Pak programs.
