Performing a Convert Process

Use the Convert Process to transform data in an Extract or Archive File.

To perform a Convert Process:

  1. From the main menu, select option 7 MIGRATION and press Enter. The Data Migration panel opens.
  2. Select option 6 CONVERT and press Enter. The Specify CONVERT Parameters and Execute panel opens.
  3. In the Source Extract File DSN field, enter the Archive or Extract File name (enclosed in quotes) that contains the data to convert.
  4. In the Control File DSN field, enter the name of the Control File (enclosed in quotes), which is a sequential data set to contain information and statistics about the Convert Process. If the data set has not been allocated, the Allocate Dataset panel will open before the Convert Process begins, allowing you to allocate the data set.
  5. In the Destination Extract DSN field, enter the name of the data set (enclosed in quotes) to contain the converted data.

For a source Archive File, you must enter a data set name that is different from the source data set name. For a source Extract File, you can leave this field blank to overwrite the source file, but the Convert Process will use a temporary file that you are prompted to allocate.

If a data set has not been allocated, the Allocate Dataset panel will open before the Convert Process begins, allowing you to allocate the data set.
  6. Specify options for the Convert Process.

You can choose to age date values and create a comma delimited output file. Other options allow you to sort tables that use a cluster index and limit the number of discarded rows. You can execute the process in batch or online, and if in batch, review the JCL and utility control statements.

  7. Select option 1 Table Map and press Enter. The CONVERT Process Table Map panel opens.
  8. Edit the Table Map and enter the destination creator ID in the Dest CID field.

Use the APPLY command to select a Table Map.

Include Column Maps to map columns and specify data transformations.

  9. Press F3 to return to the Specify CONVERT Parameters and Execute panel.
  10. Select option 2 PERFORM and press Enter to begin the Convert Process.

Depending on the processing options you select, the following panels may open at the start of the Convert Process.

    • If you choose to create a comma delimited output file, the External Format Specification panel will open for output file options.
    • If the choose to age date values, the Specify Aging Parameters panel will open for aging value options.

The Convert Process Status panel will display the status of the process.

  11. The Convert Process Report panel will open after the process is complete. Review the report and press F3 to exit.
