Creating a historical position tracking analysis

Track individual people or vehicles to learn where they were at a selected previous date and time.

Before you begin

Create a data source that imports GPS location data. The data source must contain a property that can be used for tracking against. Suitable properties link the GPS coordinates to the object that recorded the GPS coordinates, for example, the Vehicle ID. Each GPS data item must have a point-based location and a recording time.

You must also create a data source that imports the municipal road network. You can use a third-party program to generate a shape file that defines the geometry for all the roads in the city and import the shape file into a data source. Alternatively, you can define the road network in a database table and import the database table data into a data source. The data source must contain a property that indicates the speed limit, and another property that indicates the direction of travel, for example, one way, or contra-flow.

Procedure

To create a historical position tracking analysis:

  1. Select the option to create a historical position tracking analysis, and specify the values for the General, When, and Where pages. Select only one date. You can optionally select a time range.
  2. On the What page, select the data sources to include in the analysis. You must have already created a data source that includes GPS tracking data, and a data source that represents your city streets.
  3. On the Analytic Details page, specify parameters for historical position tracking.
    1. Select the person or vehicle to track.
    2. Select the tracking interval in minutes.
  4. Optional: Specify who to notify when analysis results are ready, and whether to run the analysis on a schedule.
  5. Click Save and Run.

Results

The map icons represent the location of the person or vehicle at the selected time intervals. The associated number represents the order over time. Clusters indicate that the person or vehicle was at that location more than once, and at which interval.
