Creating a route tracking analysis

Create a route tracking analysis to reveal the most frequently traveled routes in your city.

Before you begin

Create a data source that imports GPS location data. The data source must contain a property that can be used for tracking against. Suitable properties link the GPS coordinates to the object that recorded the GPS coordinates, for example, the Vehicle ID. Each GPS data item must have a point-based location and a recording time.

You must also create a data source that imports the municipal road network. You can use a third-party program to generate a shape file that defines the geometry for all the roads in the city and import the shape file into a data source. Alternatively, you can define the road network in a database table and import the database table data into a data source. The data source must contain a property that indicates the speed limit, and another property that indicates the direction of travel, for example, one way, or contra-flow.

Procedure

To create a route tracking analysis:

  1. Select the option to create a route tracking analysis, and specify the values for the General, When, and Where pages.
  2. On the What page, select the data sources to include in the analysis.
  3. On the Analytic Details page, specify parameters for route tracking.
  4. On the Analysis Tuning page, specify values as required by your analysis needs. Select Miles or Kilometers to set whether the analysis uses miles and miles per hour, or kilometers and kilometers per hour.
  5. On the Appearance page, select the order for lists, time interval to display on the chart, and the color to display for each value or range. The ranges apply to popularity values, and the colors apply to how each popularity value is displayed on the map.
  6. Optional: Specify who to notify when analysis results are ready, and whether to run the analysis on a schedule.
  7. Click Save and Run.
