Installation checklist for Custom Edition

You can use this checklist before you manually install Custom Edition in a self-hosted environment on a Self-Hosted Custom Edition (Kubernetes or Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform).

Follow these steps sequentially to make sure a successful deployment of Instana® Custom Edition.

1. Review the system requirements:
   • Environment requirements: Environment requirements
   • Storage considerations: Storage considerations
   • Create a Kubernetes cluster or a Red Hat OpenShift cluster
2. Prepare to install data stores using one of the following methods:
   • Online environment: Prepare for Online Installation
   • Offline environment: Prepare for Offline Installation
3. Install the following data stores:
   • Install Cassandra:
     • Create Security Context Constraints: Create Security Context Constraints (OpenShift only)
     • Install Cassandra using one of the following methods:
       • Online: Install Cassandra Online
       • Offline: Install Cassandra Offline
     • Deploy and verify Cassandra: Deploy and Verify Cassandra
   • Install ClickHouseKeeper or ZooKeeper (select any one):
     • Install and deploy ClickHouseKeeper:
       • Install using one of the following methods:
         • Online: Install ClickHouseKeeper Online
         • Offline: Install ClickHouseKeeper Offline
       • Deploy and verify ClickHouseKeeper: Deploy and Verify ClickHouseKeeper
     • Install and deploy ZooKeeper:
       • Install using one of the following methods:
         • Online: Install ZooKeeper Online
         • Offline: Install ZooKeeper Offline
       • Deploy and verify ZooKeeper: Deploy and Verify ZooKeeper
   • Install ClickHouse:
     • Install ClickHouse using one of the following methods:
       • Online: Install ClickHouse Online
       • Offline: Install ClickHouse Offline
     • Deploy and verify ClickHouse: Deploy and Verify ClickHouse
   • Install Elasticsearch:
     • Install Elasticsearch using one of the following methods:
       • Online: Install Elasticsearch Online
       • Offline: Install Elasticsearch Offline
     • Deploy and verify Elasticsearch: Deploy and Verify Elasticsearch
   • Install Kafka:
     • Install Kafka using one of the following methods:
       • Online: Install Kafka Online
       • Offline: Install Kafka Offline
     • Deploy and verify Kafka: Deploy and Verify Kafka
   • Install PostgreSQL:
     • Install PostgreSQL using one of the following methods:
       • Online: Install PostgreSQL Online
       • Offline: Install PostgreSQL Offline
     • Deploy and verify PostgreSQL: Deploy and Verify PostgreSQL
   • Install BeeInstana:
     • Review sizing information for BeeInstana on Kubernetes: Sizing information for BeeInstana
     • Install BeeInstana using one of the following methods:
       • Online: Installing BeeInstana online
       • Offline: Installing BeeInstana offline
     • Deploy the BeeInstana instance: Deploying BeeInstana instance
     • Review configuration options: BeeInstana configuration options
4. Install the Instana Enterprise operator:
   • Create image pull secrets: Create Image Pull Secrets
   • Create TLS secrets for the admission webhook: Create TLS secrets for the admission webhook
   • Create the values files: Create Values Files
   • Install the operator using one of the following methods:
     • Render the manifest first, then apply it: Render then Apply Manifest
     • Apply manifests directly: Direct Apply Manifests
5. Install the Instana backend:
   • Create Core and Units namespaces: Create Core and Units namespaces
   • Create image pull secrets for Core and Units namespaces: Create image pull secrets for Core and Units namespaces
   • Download the license file: Download the license file
   • Create the Instana TLS secret in the Core namespace: Create Instana TLS secret in the Core namespace
   • Create the Core secret config.yaml: Installing the Instana backend (Core secret section)
   • Create the Unit secret config-unit.yaml: Installing the Instana backend (Unit secret section)
   • Apply the Core configurations: Apply Core Configurations
   • Create a Unit and Tenant: Create Unit and Tenant
   • Identify the Instana backend versions that are compatible with your selected Custom Edition version: Compatibility matrix for Custom Edition
   • Verify the Instana Enterprise operator status: Checking Instana Enterprise operator status
   • Configure load balancers and DNS: Setting up load balancers and DNS
6. Complete the following post-installation tasks:
