Sending OpenTelemetry data to Instana

OpenTelemetry data is sent to Instana by using the following methods. These methods follow open standards. These standards are maintained by the OpenTelemetry community and Instana supports these standards.

You can configure the OpenTelemetry collector to send infrastructure and application data to the Instana agent in OTLP format. After the OpenTelemetry collector sends the data to the Instana agent, the agent forwards the data to the Instana backend. The OpenTelemetry collector can also send infrastructure and application data to the Instana backend in OTLP format. For more information, see Sending OpenTelemetry data to the Instana backend using an OpenTelemetry Collector.

It is optional to use the OpenTelemetry collector. That is, if the application enabled infrastructure and application data emission in OTLP format already, and no more data processing is needed in the middle, the infrastructure and application data from OpenTelemetry can be sent directly to the Instana agent and to Instana backend.
