High availability with multiple Instana backends

The high availability approach for Self-Hosted Classic Edition (Docker) is deprecated. It is planned to be entirely removed from the Instana documentation when the documented high availability setup for Self-Hosted Custom Edition (Kubernetes or Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform) is available. All users that depend on high availability are encouraged to move to a Custom Edition (Kubernetes or OpenShift Container Platform).

You can install the backend on a single server or two servers (multi-host). By default, Docker supervises all the active backend components. Therefore, during a possible outage, the system automatically coordinates and repairs itself.

Instana supports an active-active high availability setup. By provisioning two backends, you reduce the impact of an unplanned service outage on your premises. The Instana agent is set up to report into both backends to ensure data redundancy and service continuity.

For more information about how to configure the agent to send data to both backends, see configuring multiple backends.
