Build 257

Build 257 is released on 12 September 2023.

Minimum version to update from directly: Build 253.

Cumulative release notes #256, #257

Notes: From this release, a part of data that is written to Cassandra is written to ClickHouse. This change leads to a higher storage size requirement for the disk traces. The storage requirement depends on the workloads of your Instana deployment.

After you upgrade your Instana backend to 257, monitor the disk traces, and adjust its size if necessary.

Please monitor this volume after the update and adjust the size if necessary.

Features

Automatic tracing for IBM IMS TM Resource Adapter

Instana provides automatic tracing that collects data about the performance of the IBM IMS TM Resource Adapter as a Java application. For more information about the frameworks and tools that are used to collect data about the performance of Java applications, see Instrumented frameworks and libraries.

AWS SDK v3 Kinesis instrumentation for Node.js tracer

Node.js tracer now supports instrumentation for Kinesis in AWS SDK v3.

Etcd sensor

Etcd sensor now supports API 3.x as a Beta. For more information, see Performance metrics for etcd API version 3.x (Beta).

Kong API Gateway sensor

Kong API Gateway sensor now supports Kong-Admin-Token based authentication. For more information, see Kong-Admin-Token based authentication.

New performance metrics for Oracle RAC

Instana now collects the following performance metrics for Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC):

  • List of top ten SQL queries with high I/O in the last 1 hour
  • Library cache hit ratio
  • List of top ten SQL queries with high I/O in the last 24 hours
  • List of SQL queries that do not use bind variable in the code
  • Tablespace usage
  • Wait time per second for the following classes of Oracle wait events: user I/O, other, system I/O, concurrency, scheduler, application, commit, configuration, administrative, network, and queueing

Smart Alerts for mobile app

For mobile app monitoring, you can now get alerted on use cases such as throughput based on sessions and views, HTTP status codes, and custom events. For more information, see Smart Alerts for mobile app monitoring.

Table widget for events

In the table widget in your custom dashboards, now you can see a list of events that have been triggered either live or within a specified time period. For more information, see Table widget.

IBM MQ sensor: Notification for RDQM switchover

Instana automatically discovers and monitors RDQM (replicated data queue manager) queue managers in a high availability (HA) group. Each RDQM queue manager's running node and standby nodes are shown in the Instana UI. If a switchover occurs, to move a running queue manager from one node to the other, an event is triggered to notify that a switchover occurred on the node.

IBM MQ Tracing

Nginx sensor

Nginx sensor now supports Windows operating systems.

OTel C++ client SDK package

Now you can include OpenTelemetry Instrumentation in your C++ applications by using OTel C++ client SDK. For more information, see Installing the OTel C++ client SDK package.

Table widget for Infrastructure and Platforms

You can create table widgets in custom dashboards for Infrastructure and Platforms. For more information, see Table widget.

Beta

Salesforce alert channel

You can now create Salesforce incidents by using Instana. After you create a Salesforce alert channel in the Instana UI, all alert notifications that are sent by Instana can be sent to Salesforce through Salesforce Incident Object Model.

For more information, see Integrating with Salesforce (Beta).

Improvements

ActiveMQ 5.17 and 5.18 support for Java tracer

ActiveMQ 5.17.x and 5.18.x are supported in Java tracer.

For more information, see Messaging services.

Event APIs

  • To retrieve agent monitoring events exclusively, now you can use GET /api/events/agent-monitoring-events. For more information, see OpenAPI.
  • To retrieve Kubernetes info events exclusively, now you can use the GET /api/events/kubernetes-info-events API. For more information, see OpenAPI.

Support grouping in latency distribution chart in Unbounded analytics

For grouped results, the latency distribution chart within Unbounded analytics now offers support for grouping. The chart shows the top 5 groups plus an 'Others' group.

Fixes

KPI Card Layout

The layout of the KPI Cards on the Application and Service Summary pages is adjusted to match other screens when the window size is reduced.

Unbounded Analytics

In the Unbounded Analytics page, if a tag filter value was blank, the value suggestions of other tag filters couldn't be loaded.

The issue is fixed now. Even though a tag filter value is blank, you can still see the value suggestions for other tag filters.

Associated technology is displayed for WebSphere Liberty services

The IBM WebSphere Liberty calls were classified as JVM. Now, on the Applications page, the Services tab shows a Technologies column. The associated technologies for the IBM WebSphere Liberty service are displayed in the column.

IBM i sensor

  • The metrics for SSD and auxiliary storage pool were not displayed in the Instana UI. Now you can view the metrics for SSD and auxiliary storage pool in the Instana UI.
  • Message ID and message text for custom events are updated to correctly map them with event type and description.

Limited badges and technology icons

On the Services list of the Applications page, the labels in the Types column and the icons in the Technologies column are limited to 3, with the remainder in a tooltip. In this way, the table is not too wide to see all the columns.

Limited badges and icons

Duplicate entries of metrics in Analyze Infrastructure

In the Analyze Infrastructure page, if a metric was added multiple times, multiple entries of the same metric was displayed.

Duplicate entries of the metric with the same aggregation values are no longer displayed in the Analyze Infrastructure page. Only one entry for a metric with the same aggregate value is displayed to make it easier to analyze the page.

Minor releases

257-1

Previously, an internal error occurred when an application perspective was deleted. Now this issue is fixed.

257-2

Previously, overwriting the JVM heap was not possible with Kafka and ZooKeeper.

257-3

An issue that prevented the IdP Group Mapping from being updated is fixed now.
