Scenarios for information governance

Implementing information governance best practices, such as documenting business terms, information governance policies, and data rules, is a valuable strategy for all organizations. An organization can gauge the effectiveness of its information governance efforts by using IBM® InfoSphere® Information Governance Dashboard.

These scenarios show how different organizations can use InfoSphere Information Governance Dashboard to measure the effectiveness of their information governance efforts.

Scenario: Evaluating the current information governance strategy

At a large manufacturing business, a governance officer oversees the company's information governance system. By using InfoSphere Information Governance Dashboard, the governance officer can evaluate the effectiveness of widely used terms and information governance policies and whether the effort placed into managing this information is valuable.

By using InfoSphere Information Governance Dashboard, the governance officer can find answers to the following types of questions:
  • Do all of the business terms and information governance policies have stewards assigned to them?
  • Are technical assets linked to business terms?
For example, the governance officer might find that many terms and information governance policies are defined and included, but some are not assigned an owner or steward. This discovery identifies an area where more focus might be required. Governance information has no value if it is not current, or if team members who access the information cannot find someone to provide answers or make adjustments if needed.

Scenario: Examining information governance component relationships

At a company, a data quality officer evaluates the information governance system by examining the relationships between the information governance policies and the data rules that enforce those information governance policies. By using InfoSphere Information Governance Dashboard, the data quality officer can answer the following types of questions:
  • Which data rules are being run in a production environment, and when are they run?
  • How many rows did the data rules process?
  • Which information governance policies are capturing the largest number of run results that did not meet the target during the latest runs of data rules?
  • Who are the stewards for the information governance policies that have run results that did not meet the target during the latest runs of data rules?

By using InfoSphere Information Governance Dashboard, the governance officer and the data quality officer are able to understand how well the information governance rules and information governance policies are implemented across the organization. With this understanding, they gain insight into the effectiveness of their information governance efforts and identify gaps that might require further attention.
