Performance view (Monitoring perspective)

The Performance view of the Monitoring perspective allows you to diagnose the performance of subscriptions, or tables within a subscription, by selecting metrics by which to gauge performance. It allows you to focus on measuring the performance of CDC Replication processes and components rather than other applications and processes that may also reside on the server with CDC Replication.

Note: The Performance view and the ability to analyze subscription performance is only available for datastores that support this feature.

The Performance view consists of four areas, including the selected subscription (and any selected tables) and a list of available metrics. Metrics are dynamic, and will vary depending on the subscription selected. Use the Collect Data button to toggle data collection on or off. After clicking this button, the graphical display area is enabled, which contains three zones:

Bottlenecks
Displays a bar chart featuring the five components of the pipeline: Log Reader, Source Engine, Communication, Target Engine, and Target Database. The results of the bar chart will help you isolate which components are causing bottlenecks.
Latency
Displays a graphical summary of latency for the selected subscription.
Statistics
Displays a graph of the performance of the selected metrics with a statistics count area.

After selecting a subscription, click Collect Data to start collecting data. If you observe latency and a bottleneck is occurring, you can then proceed to collect metrics that relate to the component that is causing the bottleneck. For example, if you observe latency and there is a bottleneck in the Source Engine component, you should then collect metrics that relate to this component.

The Performance view offers two modes for viewing statistical data: Live and Snapshot.

Using Live mode, you can monitor the performance of multiple subscriptions in real time. The performance information will be stored in memory for the period of time defined in the Statistic History Retained (minutes) box on the Preferences dialog.

If you want to create a record of the performance activity, the data can be saved to file. The first time that you add a subscription in the Performance view and collect data, you will be asked if you want to save the data; if you choose Yes, performance activities will be recorded in a comma-delimited file. The file can then be opened in Snapshot mode for further analysis.

Note: Collecting statistics for multiple subscriptions or tables uses additional system resources and may affect performance.
