Modifying rule sets

You can make changes to a rule set after it has been created.

CDC Replication evaluates the rule sets when replication is started in order to determine which tables are replicated. Replication must be stopped before any modifications can be made to rule sets.

While you are making changes to a rule set, a star will appear next to the rule set name in the Rules view, until the changes in the rule set are saved. Rule sets that are not valid cannot be saved and must be corrected before you can proceed.

If you want to back out of your changes before you save them, you can click Revert to go back to the latest saved rule set details.

Before starting replication, you can evaluate the rule set by previewing the tables that will be in-scope for replication. Management Console will display a list of the tables that satisfy the rule set criteria at the current moment. That is to say, what is actually in the database at the moment the preview occurs; changes in the database may result in the list of in-scope tables being different at the moment that replication is actually started than it was when previewed.

After making changes to a rule set, restarting replication will result in a refresh being performed on all tables in the subscription that currently match your rule set criteria but did not when the subscription was last mirrored. The refresh will be a structural refresh, meaning that the target tables will be dropped and recreated. Tables in the subscription that continue to match the modified rule set will begin mirroring. If you have marked a Table Capture Point for tables that match the rule set criteria, the capture point will be obeyed. The table will not be refreshed and replication will begin at the set point. Tables that no longer meet the criteria of a rule set will be excluded from replication, but will not be deleted from the target.
