Key concepts of IBM IoT Connected Vehicle Insights
Before you start to work with your service and read the more detailed documentation, review the key concepts of IBM® IoT Connected Vehicle Insights.
Car probe data
Car probe data (CPD) is the data that is received by IBM IoT Connected Vehicle Insights from IoT-enabled devices in a connected vehicle, which is also referred to as a moving object. Car probe data, which is also referred to as probe vehicle data (PVD) in the Automotive industry, typically includes geographic location, movement, health status, driver information, events of interest, and more. Car probe data is received and processed directly by the Vehicle Data Hub (VDH) component, from which it is transferred to other IBM IoT Connected Vehicle Insights system components.
By default, IBM IoT Connected Vehicle Insights supports the following car probe data from vehicle sensors as defined by ISO standard 22837.
Drivers
A driver is identified by a unique ID and can be associated with many vehicles or moving objects. Depending on which part of the IBM IoT Connected Vehicle Insights service is handling the driver information, a driver represents either the registered asset owner or the driver of a vehicle, for example:
- In the Asset Management component, the driver is the owner or the person that is registered as the main driver of the vehicle.
- In the VDH component, the driver in the car probe data is the person that is currently driving the vehicle or moving object.
- In the Driver Behavior component, the driver is the person that was driving the vehicle at the time that the data was retrieved.
Events
An event is a significant occurrence that relates to a moving object or its surrounding contextual environment. An event happens at a clearly defined time and geographic location, and when triggered, results in an action. An event is uniquely identified, classified by type, and described in a collection of fields. IBM IoT Connected Vehicle Insights supports dynamic event injection from both connected vehicles and external data sources.
Moving objects
A moving object is a car, motorbike, truck, van, or any other type of vehicle that is installed with an IoT sensor that can communicate car probe data to IBM IoT Connected Vehicle Insights by using a supported communication protocol. In various configuration files and code samples for IBM IoT Connected Vehicle Insights, a moving object is synonymous with a vehicle. A moving object ID can represent a vehicle ID. A moving object or vehicle must be registered in the Asset Management component of IBM IoT Connected Vehicle Insights before you can start to collect and process IoT data from the vehicle.
