Registering and managing maps

Use the Vehicle Maps (Automotive) application to configure and deploy the geographical maps that the Dynamic Map Manager (DMM) component and the connected vehicle navigation systems use. Several map vendors and versions are supported for use with IBM® IoT Connected Vehicle Insights. Commercial map data with standard based formats are supported, in addition to support for OpenStreetMap (OSM) and Zenrin Maps.

A vehicle map contains a set of attributes, which include the version, vendor, and the file location of the map data that the VDH needs to deploy the map to the DMM component. A map can be assigned to a moving object asset, such as a vehicle, which means that the VDH can identify the exact map vendor and version a moving object is using.

From the Vehicle Maps (Automotive) application in IBM Maximo Asset Management, you can do the following map management tasks.

Managing map vendors

To manage map vendors, IBM IoT Connected Vehicle Insights uses the both the Companies and Company Master applications of Maximo Asset Management.

For more information about how to manage the map vendors of your IBM IoT Connected Vehicle Insights service, see the following Maximo Asset Management documentation in IBM Knowledge Center.

Creating map records

Create a map record to define the vehicle maps that are used by both the connected moving objects and the DMM component.

Procedure

  1. Open the Vehicle Maps (Automotive) application and click New Map.
  2. Specify a version, vendor, file path, and format for the map.
  3. Optional. Enter a description.
  4. Save the map.

Creating a new version of a map

When a new version of a map that your service is using becomes available, you must create a map record for the new version of the map.

About this task

To simplify the administration of map versions, an option is provided in the Vehicle Maps (Automotive) application actions menu to help you to easily add a new version of an existing map. When you use the Create New Map Version function, the new map record is populated with most of the attributes of the original map version record.

Procedure

  1. Open the Vehicle Maps (Automotive) application, select the existing map record that you are adding a new version for.
  2. From the Select Actions menu, click Create New Map Version.
  3. Enter the map version and a description.
  4. Click OK.

Changing the status of a map

Every map record contains a status attribute, which determines which actions and processes can occur. For example, you cannot delete a map record when it is being deployed.

The following table describes each of the possible map status values and also indicates whether the map record can be deleted in the specified state.

Status Description Deletable
NEW A created map record that is not yet processed. When you create a map record, the status of the record is automatically set to NEW. Yes
VERIFIED A map that is verified and can be deployed by using the map tool. Yes
APPR Confirmed to deploy the map. Yes
READY A map that is ready to be deployed and loaded on to the DMM component in staging mode. The VDH can receive and process only maps that are ready. Although staging maps are not used by the map-matching process, they can be used to specify a map_id in the Databus interface. No
UPLOADED A map that is ready to be used in production mode. The map is uploaded to the DMM component by the VDH. The map is enabled during the map-matching process when the map version and map vendor are not specified in the car probe interface. No
OBSOLETED A map that is deactivated and is no longer deployed on the DMM component of the service. The map is removed when the DMM component receives the map from the VDH. No
DECOMMISSIONED A map that is decommissioned from the DMM component. No

Procedure

  1. From the Go To menu, click Vehicle Maps (Automotive).
  2. To change the status of a map, select the map record and click Change Status.
  3. Select a status and save your change.

Note. You can change the status of several map records simultaneously by selecting multiple map records and then clicking Change Status.

Refreshing maps

Use the Vehicle Maps (Automotive) application to refresh map information in VDH and DMM. The loading and unloading tasks are started in DMM with the refreshed map information.

Procedure

  1. From the Go To menu, click Assets > Vehicle Maps (Automotive).
  2. From the Select Actions menu, click Update Maps.
  3. When prompted, click either Yes to continue or No to cancel.
