Queue sharing group migration

Although you can include queue managers from different IBM® MQ for z/OS® versions in a queue sharing group, you should migrate all queue managers in a queue sharing group to the newest version as quickly as you can.

Queue sharing groups can contain queue managers with a restricted set of different versions. This is supported so that you can migrate and test the upgrade of each queue manager.

When you migrate queue managers in a queue sharing group, migrate all the queue managers to the new version as quickly as you can. Queue sharing groups with queue managers at different versions are harder to administer than if all the queue managers are at the same version.

Before you migrate any member of a queue sharing group, you must upgrade the early code on each LPAR that runs a member of the queue sharing group. The early code on each LPAR must be upgraded to the highest level of IBM MQ that you are migrating to. For more information, see step 2 of Preparing to migrate a single IBM MQ for z/OS queue manager.

Migrate each queue manager, one at a time, leaving the queue sharing group running. At no stage is an outage of the entire queue sharing group required.

Migrating each queue manager comprises the bulk of the work of migrating a queue sharing group. Approach migrating a queue sharing group as requiring some extra tasks that must be completed during the migration of each queue manager. These tasks are listed in Migrating IBM MQ for z/OS - order of tasks as part of the procedure to migrate a single queue manager.

A good approach is to create a migration plan that incorporates queue sharing group migration. For more information, see Planning to migrate IBM MQ for z/OS to IBM MQ for z/OS 10.0.

Queue managers that run at IBM MQ for z/OS 9.3.n, 9.4.n, and 10.0.n LTS and CD releases (where n is greater than or equal to 0) can coexist in a queue sharing group.

When you plan a migration, refer to Queue sharing group coexistence on z/OS to determine whether your queue sharing group supports the migration of your queue manager.
