IBM Tivoli Monitoring, Version 6.2.3

CPU Utilization

This workspace provides information about the CPU use of your system. Use this information to monitor individual nodes or the system as a whole.

Description

You can determine whether CPU use is trending up or down, view forecasts, and predict when warning or critical thresholds will be reached.

When CPU use is at or above 80 percent, applications on the system can become slow or stop responding completely. Use this workspace to view warning and critical threshold levels and monitor your system's CPU use. The data that the monitoring agent gathers from a system is used to create forecasts for 7, 30, and 90 days to help you identify which systems require attention, and when systems are likely to reach a predetermined threshold.

The predefined CPU Utilization workspace provides different table views that enable you to view warning and critical threshold levels and forecasts for every monitored system. Each column in each table displays output attribute information:

  • CPU Utilization Forecast Overview

This table displays forecast summary information for the monitored systems. It contains the following columns:

    • System Name, indicating the managed system to which the forecast applies.
    • Confidence, indicating the confidence in the predicted trend. This is a percentage, 0-100%. Systems for which the Confidence is less than 20% are displayed in red.
    • Strength, indicating the strength of the trend based on a combination of the Confidence and Number of Samples. Strength is a value of 1 (weak), 2 (moderate), or 3 (strong). Systems for which the Strength equals 1 (weak) are displayed in red.
    • Number of Samples, indicating the number of data points used as input for the Least Squares Regression calculation to predict the trend of the data.
    • Time To Critical Threshold, which displays the number of days until the critical threshold for the monitored system is reached. Systems with less than seven days until the critical threshold is reached are displayed in red. If a threshold is zero, either the threshold has been passed, it will not be reached, or it is beyond the scope of the calculation. Thresholds with a value of zero are not highlighted. The threshold value is determined by the associated task and the notification period is determined by the associated situation.
    • Time To Warning Threshold, which displays the number of days until the warning threshold for the monitored system is reached. Systems with less than seven days until the warning threshold is reached are displayed in yellow. If a threshold is zero, either the threshold has been passed, or it is beyond the scope of the calculation. Thresholds with a value of zero are not highlighted. The threshold value is determined by the associated task and the notification period is determined by the associated situation.

An upward arrow indicates an upward trend; a downward arrow indicates a downward trend. A horizontal arrow indicates that the trend is neither rising nor falling.

  • 7 Day Forecast

The 7 Day Forecast table contains the following columns: System name, indicating the system to which the forecast applies; and Data which displays the predicted value after 7 days.

The data in the Data column is displayed as a percentage.

  • 30 Day Forecast

The 30 Day Forecast table contains the following columns: System name, indicating the system to which the forecast applies, and Data which displays the predicted value after 30 days.

The data in the Data column is displayed as a percentage.

  • 90 Day Forecast

The 90 Day Forecast table contains the following columns: System name, indicating the system to which the forecast applies; and Data which displays the predicted value after 90 days.

The data in the Data column is displayed as a percentage.

The icons in the Data column indicate:

  • Empty circle icon Less than 15% use
  • Quarter circle icon Between 15% and 40% use
  • Half circle icon Between 41% and 70% use
  • Three quarters circle icon Between 71% and 90% use
  • Full circle icon Greater than 90% use

From this workspace, you can link to the CPU Utilization Forecast Details workspace. This workspace displays more detailed forecast information for a particular system.

  • CPU Utilization Forecast Details
This workspace shows the historic CPU use of individual nodes and predicts the future CPU use. Use this workspace to plan when you need to update your resources to avoid overloading your system.
