Connect to IBM® i: Interfaces
Use the graphical interface that is provided by IBM Navigator for i to access and administer your system, or use the character-based interface from an attached console or emulator session. A link to the Navigator for i interface is included with the IBM i Access Client Solutions licensed program.
You can choose the interface that is based on your
needs and the type of connection you have with your system.
- Navigator for i
- This interface is a graphical user interface that is used to interact with systems from a web browser. It is the primary user interface for accessing and managing IBM i environments. With Navigator for i administration, you can perform many functions with ease by incorporating wizards, customizable displays, and a wide variety of applications.
- Character-based interface
- This interface is available from most emulator sessions or consoles and includes a menu-based hierarchy of tasks. A character-based interface provides three primary displays: navigational, input, and informational. All IBM i tasks are organized into categories accessible through the main menu. To move through the character-based interface's hierarchy of tasks, you enter menu selections until you find the task of interest.
- Consoles
- Select from different consoles to access and administer your system, which is based on the model of your system.
- Telnet protocol
- The supported Telnet function allows your system to act as a Telnet server and a Telnet client. Log on and use your system as though you were connected directly to it within the local network. Telnet is supported through a character-based interface.
