Removing an operational NVMe device from a partition

To remove an operational NVMe device from an IBM® i partition, follow this procedure.

Task What to do
1. Identify the namespaces on the NVMe device.
  1. Start System Service Tools (STRSST), and specify the user name and password.
  2. On the System Service Tools (SST) display, select Work with disk units.
  3. On the Work with Disk Units display, select Display disk configuration.
  4. On the Display Disk Configuration display, select Display NVMe namespaces.
  5. Locate the NVMe device that you want to remove. Write down the Serial Number and Resource Name of the NVMe device. You will use this information in future steps.
  6. If there are no namespaces associated with the NVMe device, go to task 4.
  7. If every namespace in the NVMe device that you located in step 5 has an asterisk (*) shown for the ASP and Unit number, go to task 3.
  8. Write down the ASP, Unit, and Resource Name of each namespace listed under the NVMe device that you located in step 5. The namespaces are IBM i disk units.
2. Suspend units from mirror protection.
  1. Press F12 to return to the Work with Disk Units display.
  2. On the Work with Disk Units display, select Work with disk unit recovery.
  3. On the Work with Disk Recovery display, select Suspend mirrored protection.
  4. Locate each disk unit that you wrote down in task 1 step 8 that has an ASP and Unit number. Select 1=Suspend Mirrored Protection on each located unit. Press Enter to suspend mirror protection on the units.
  5. Press F12 to return to the Work with Disk Units display.
3. Delete the namespaces from the NVMe device.
  1. On the Work with Disk Units display, select Work with disk configuration.
  2. On the Work with Disk Configuration display, select Work with NVMe Devices.
  3. On the Work with NVMe Device display, select Delete existing NVMe Namespaces.
  4. Select the NVMe device.
  5. Select 4=Delete Namespace for each namespace listed for the NVMe device.
  6. Press F10 to confirm the delete of the name spaces.
