Task 3: Preparing to start the system from an alternate IPL device

To start the system from an alternate IPL device, set your control panel for IPL type D and manual mode. You may also need to specify which I/O processor to use. The steps vary based on the type of system and control panel.

If you are using logical partitions with Hardware Management Console (HMC), perform these steps on the console of the logical partition on which you want to perform an IPL.
  1. In your HMC, expand Systems Management > Servers.
  2. Select the system.
  3. Select the check box for the partition.
  4. From the menu for the partition, click Properties.
  5. In the Partition Properties window, click the Settings tab.
  6. Under the Boot category, change the IPL source to D and the Keylock position to Manual.
  7. Click OK.
  8. From the menu for the partition, click Configuration > Manage Profiles.
  9. In the Managed Profiles pane, click the profile name.
  10. In the Logical Partition Profile Properties pane, click the Tagged I/O tab.
  11. From the Alternate restart device list, select the slot with the I/O processor that is attached to the restart device.
  12. Click OK.
  13. In the Managed Profiles pane, click Close.
  14. If the partition is running, from the menu for the partition, click Operations > Shut Down.
    Wait for the partition to reach Not Activated status.
  15. From the menu for the partition, click Operations > Activate.
