Chapter 2. Invoking the Interactive Chart Utility (ICU)

GDDM-PGF V2R1.3 Programming Guide and Reference
SC33-0333-01

------------------ General-Use Programming Interface -------------------

The Interactive Chart Utility (ICU) can be invoked in two ways:

  • As a stand-alone program

  • Called from an application program.

The stand-alone ICU is described in the GDDM-PGF Interactive Chart Utility book.

This topic describes how to call the ICU from an application program.

When you call the ICU from an application program using the CSxxxx calls, you can do everything that the stand-alone program can plus some extra functions that are not available with the stand-alone program. These functions are described first.

This section is followed by an introduction to the CSxxxx calls. The calls are described in detail in the section "Alphabetic list of chart calls" in topic 4.100. The CHART call is then introduced. The call is described in detail, in the section "CHART - Invoke Interactive Chart Utility" in topic 4.101.

Next, there is a section that covers general points you need to know for whichever method of calling you use. It also explains when to use the CSxxxx calls and when to use the CHART call. Normally, however, you should use the CSxxxx calls in preference to the CHART call.

Finally, there are some example programs that demonstrate calling the ICU with the CHART call. Further examples of invoking the ICU by this method is given in Appendix A, "Sample programs" in topic A.0.
