Upgrading Fusion Data Foundation

Steps to upgrade the Fusion Data Foundation service.

Before you begin

  • Important: If you upgrade to Fusion Data Foundation 4.21 or later and the Global Data Platform service is installed or configured, the service is automatically migrated to version 6.0.1.0. If automatic updates are enabled, disable automatic upgrades before proceeding. Review the supported migration scenarios before you proceed with the upgrade.
  • For the Fusion Data Foundation service upgrade, follow this upgrade sequence: 4.16.x > 4.17.x> 4.18.x> 4.19.x> 4.20.x.
  • If you plan to do a offline installation in IBM Fusion 2.13.0, mirror the Fusion Data Foundation images to your enterprise registry. For the procedure and images to download, see Mirroring Data Foundation images deployed on OpenShift Container Platform.

About this task

Data Foundation service can be set to auto update or manual update. You can set this value during the installation and change after installation. If Enable automatic updates is selected during installation, you can ignore the rest of the upgrade steps.
If Disable automatic updates is set and a new Data Foundation service version is available, then a message prompts you to upgrade. For example, Service upgrade available, Version 4.20 is available for Data Foundation service.
Note: During a IBM Fusion upgrade on a hosted cluster, you may briefly see the Fusion Data Foundation service status as Upgrade Available or Upgrading. If you upgraded OpenShift® Container Platform after the installation of Fusion Data Foundation service, then this behavior is expected, and the Fusion Data Foundation client reports as healthy again after a short time.
Do the following steps to manually upgrade the service:

Procedure

  1. Log in to IBM Fusion user interface.
  2. Click Services menu to go to the Services page.
Alternatively, you can go to the Settings > Upgrades page and view the upgrade status and in progress upgrades. If you can run service upgrades in parallel in a non-disruptive manner, click Upgrade (<number of upgrades available>). If there are any errors found in the automatic prechecks, then click the service tile for more details about the error.
  3. In the Installed section, click Upgrade link for the Data Foundation service. Alternatively, from the (ellipsis overflow menu) of Data Foundation, click Upgrade.
You can see the Upgrade option only when an upgrade is available for the service.
The upgrade starts and you can see the upgrade status. The IBM Fusion runs common pre-checks during upgrade. You can easily monitor each step, with a clear understanding of what is in progress. If anything gets stuck, a new guided workflow shows you what needs your attention and guides you with the resolution.
  4. Wait for a minute or more to see the upgrade status in the IBM Fusion user interface.
After the upgrade completes, a success notification gets displayed.
Note: If you see Service upgrade has failed message, then wait for the upgrade to retry automatically. If issues do not exist in your setup, then upgrade completes successfully.
  5. To change the auto update setting after installation, do the following steps:
    1. In the Installed section of the Services page, click the ellipsis menu of Data Foundation service.
    2. Click Enable automatic updates or Disable automatic updates option. If you enable automatic updates, then Disable automatic updates option is available in the ellipsis overflow menu.
