Migrating Global Data Platform

Migrate the Global Data Platform service when installing or upgrading Fusion Data Foundation 4.21 or later.

Before you begin

Ensure that the following conditions are met before starting the migration:
  • No backup or restore jobs are running.
  • The IBM Storage Scale cluster is healthy:
    • Run the mmhealth command.
    • Verify that all components report a healthy status.
  • No MachineConfigPool (MCP) rollout is in progress.
  • Global Data Platform version is 6.0.0.2. If the current version is 6.0.0.1, upgrade it to 6.0.0.2 before proceeding. For instructions, see Upgrading Global Data Platform.

About this task

Starting with Red Hat® OpenShift® Container Platform 4.21 and later, and with Fusion Data Foundation 4.21 and later, the Global Data Platform service is integrated into Fusion Data Foundation.

In earlier releases, Global Data Platform was bundled separately with IBM Fusion. From Fusion Data Foundation 4.21 onward:

  • No separate upgrade option is available for version for 6.0.0.2 and later. Global Data Platform upgrades and migration of IBM Storage Scale remote mount (CNSA) from version 6.0.0.2 to 6.0.1.0 or later are performed automatically in the background during Fusion Data Foundation installation or upgrade.
  • Each Fusion Data Foundation release includes an updated IBM Storage Scale build, which is applied automatically.
  • Future updates to IBM Storage Scale are delivered through Fusion Data Foundation upgrades.

The migration workflow depends on your deployment scenario.

Procedure

Scenario 1: Only Global Data Platform is installed

If Global Data Platform 6.0.0.2 is installed and Fusion Data Foundation is not installed:

During installation:

  • The system automatically triggers the Global Data Platform migration.
  • Global Data Platform is upgraded to version 6.0.1.0 or later as part of the process.

Scenario 2: Both Fusion Data Foundation and Global Data Platform are installed

If Fusion Data Foundation 4.20 or earlier and Global Data Platform 6.0.0.2 are already installed:

  1. Disable the Fusion Data Foundation automatic upgrade to prevent unintended upgrade behavior.
  2. Manually trigger the Fusion Data Foundation upgrade from version 4.20 to 4.21 or later. For instructions, see Upgrading Fusion Data Foundation.

During the upgrade:

  • Global Data Platform migration runs and completes automatically.
  • No separate action is required for migration.

Results

After the Fusion Data Foundation installation or upgrade and the Global Data Platform migration are complete:

  • The Global Data Platform tile is removed from the IBM Fusion user interface.
  • The Remote Filesystems page is no longer available in the IBM Fusion user interface.
  • All IBM Storage Scale pods run in a single namespace, ibm-spectrum-scale.
  • In the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform web console, navigate to Storage > External Systems to view version details and remote cluster information.

What to do next

To manage and configure Global Data Platform after migration, go to Data Foundation > External Storage in the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform web console. For more information, see Configuring with IBM Storage Scale.
