Upgrading Fusion Data Foundation service

Steps to upgrade the Fusion Data Foundation service.

Before you begin

For the Fusion Data Foundation service upgrade, follow this upgrade sequence: 4.16.x > 4.17.x> 4.18.x.
For offline installation environment, migrate Fusion Data Foundation image content source policy to an image digest mirror set. For the procedure to migrate, see Migrating Data Foundation ImageContentSourcePolicy to ImageDigestMirrorSet.

The version of Data Foundation service is dependent on the version of OpenShift® Container Platform.

When you order and upsize Logical Volume Manager (LVM) drives in the upgraded IBM Fusion HCI 2.10 version, IBM Fusion HCI automatically detects the presence of control plane drives and configures them for LVM. However, if LVM is already enabled in your existing installation of IBM Fusion HCI and you add additional 1.6 TB drives again, the newly added drives remain unutilized.

Procedure

Log in to IBM Fusion HCI user interface.
Click Services menu to go to the Services page.

Note: Alternatively, you can go to the Settings > Upgrades page and view the upgrade status and in progress upgrades. The Data Foundation goes into rolling upgrade. If you can run service upgrades in parallel in a non-disruptive manner, click Upgrade (<number of upgrades available>). If there are any errors found in the automatic prechecks, then click the service tile for more details about the error.
In the Installed section, click Upgrade from the ellipsis menu of Data Foundation.
Only if an upgrade is available for Data Foundation, the Upgrade option is displayed.
The Upgrade pre-check window gets displayed.
In the Upgrade pre-check window, monitor the progress of the pre-checks.
The IBM Fusion HCI runs prechecks to ensure that your system is ready for an upgrade.
If all the checks pass or there are some conditions in warning state, you can proceed with the upgrade. However, it is highly recommended to fix the warnings to prevent any potential impacts on the system during the upgrade process. Immediately address any blocker errors encountered during prechecks, as they require fixing before proceeding with the upgrade. After the completion of all pre-checks, a summary of total number of issues found gets displayed. If there are no blocker issues, go to step 6.
If there are blocker issues, do the following steps:
1. To know more about blockers or warnings, click View upgrade details link in the Services page. The IBM Fusion HCI user interface takes you to the Services page wherein a Upgrade pre-check report window displays all the Blocking issues and Issues (optional). Alternatively, click the service tile in error state in the Upgrade page to view the Upgrade pre-check report with Blocking issues and Issues (optional) issues.
2. Click on the corresponding BMYxxxxxx code to know more about how to fix the issue.
  If you find error resources in the Resources section of the individual issues, you can click the resource link to know more details about it.
3. Fix all the blocking issues based on the guidance.
4. Return to the Services page of the IBM Fusion HCI user interface and click Upgrade.
After the pre-checks complete without any blocker issues, click Upgrade now.
To know more details about the upgrade that is progress, click View details in the notification tab of the Services page. A slide out pane displays the following details:
- Progress percentage
- Upgrade pre-check. As this is complete, a check mark appears and the status shows complete.
- Upgrade in progress.
Wait for a minute or more for the upgrade to complete.
After the completion of upgrade, a success notification gets displayed.
To view the status of the upgrade, go to Settings > Upgrade or the Services page.
Important:
- If auto-upgrade is not enabled during installation, you may encounter a situation where some components of the Data Foundation operators do not upgrade as expected. To ensure all components are upgraded correctly, you must verify that all InstallPlans in the openshift-storage namespace are approved. For steps, see Data Foundation operator upgrade is not initiated.
- The upgrade consumes more time depending on the number of compute nodes in the rack.
