ISF Overview

The Internal Standard Format (ISF) is an XML schema based on the ISO20022 data dictionary supporting rich business content for payments and securities applications. Typically payments and securities applications are required to deal with a variety of formats and standards (for example, SWIFT, EDI, XML, NACHA.) when interchanging data with other applications and trading partners. This can lead to complex application architectures to support multiple transformation combinations. The ISF provides a single canonical representation for business transactions that is independent from the details of each interface, supported by a logical message model and an associated physical representation in XML.

The single, canonical representation brings many benefits, including:
  • a reduction in the number of transformation combinations that must be supported
  • simplification of the business process
  • increased potential for reuse
  • framework to define new service interfaces
  • extensibility
