Null transmissions

An endpoint can specify that a null transmission be sent. When the delivery time for a partner passes and no transactions have been ingested for that partner, a null transmission is sent. It can be sent with other batch (ICL) transmissions in a single outbound transmission or alone.

The contents of a null transmission depend on the type of transmission. The following list describes the contents of a null transmission for the different transmission types:
  • For transmissions that are not X9 transmissions, a null transmission is a batch (ICL) that contains no transactions.
  • For X9 transmissions, a null transmission is a batch (ICL) that contains the header and control records (type 10, 20, 70, 90), but does not have any transactions.

For an active business day, empty open batches (ICLs) are created as placeholders for all possible null transmissions for that business day. Transactions are first mapped to these batches (ICLs).

Distribution creates the following null transmission sets for each endpoint that specifies that a null transmission is required:
Placeholder set
This set consists of one null transmission for each transmission delivery that is configured for the partner of the related endpoint.
Processing window set
Each transmission in this set corresponds to a processing window activity record for the business day that is being activated.
