Figure 1 shows how the Payment Feature Services components process return entries:
  1. The ODFI sends a transaction to the RDFI. This is indicated by the blue arrow labeled with the number 1. The Risk Management component for the RDFI monitors the transaction when it is received.
  2. The RDFI detects an error while validating the transaction it received and creates a return entry. The Risk Management component for the RDFI no longer monitors the returned transaction.
  3. The RDFI sends the return entry to the ODFI. This is indicated by the red arrows labeled with the number 2.
  4. The ODFI receives the return entry.
  5. The ODFI dishonors the returned transaction and sends the dishonored return entry to the RDFI. This is indicated by the pink arrows labeled with the number 3.
  6. The RDFI receives the dishonored return entry.
  7. The RDFI contests the dishonored return and sends the contested dishonored return entry to the ODFI. This is indicated by the green arrows labeled with the number 4.
  8. The ODFI receives the contested dishonored return entry.
