Processing flow

Figure 1 shows how the Payment Feature Services
components process return entries:
- The ODFI sends a transaction to the RDFI. This is indicated by the blue arrow labeled with the number 1. The Risk Management component for the RDFI monitors the transaction when it is received.
- The RDFI detects an error while validating the transaction it received and creates a return entry. The Risk Management component for the RDFI no longer monitors the returned transaction.
- The RDFI sends the return entry to the ODFI. This is indicated by the red arrows labeled with the number 2.
- The ODFI receives the return entry.
- The ODFI dishonors the returned transaction and sends the dishonored return entry to the RDFI. This is indicated by the pink arrows labeled with the number 3.
- The RDFI receives the dishonored return entry.
- The RDFI contests the dishonored return and sends the contested dishonored return entry to the ODFI. This is indicated by the green arrows labeled with the number 4.
- The ODFI receives the contested dishonored return entry.
