Creating a shared storage pool
You use the Create Shared Storage Pool wizard to specify Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) virtual servers and define a storage pool to create a shared storage pool.
Before you begin
Before you can create a shared storage pool, you must ensure
that your environment satisfies the following requirements:
- The PowerVM® Editions hardware feature
is enabled on your system.
You enable PowerVM Editions by entering an activation code. Enter the activation code in the management software.
- Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) Version 2.2.2.0 or later is installed and
the license activated on all virtual servers that you want to use
in the shared storage pool.Note: IBM® Flex System Manager will not recognize shared storage pools on previous versions of the Virtual I/O Server.
- VIOS virtual servers must be configured using a fully-qualified hostname.
- IBM Flex System Manager Common Agent is started. For information, see Restarting Common Agent.
- The shared storage pool VIOS subagent is installed. For information, see Installing the shared storage pool VIOS subagent.
- The
VIOS operating system is discovered, active, and accessible in IBM Flex
System Manager.
For information, see Performing a system discovery.
- There are at least two SAN-based physical
volumes that are accessible to every VIOS virtual server that you
want to use in the shared storage pool.
- One of these physical volumes, defined as the repository disk, is used to store the metadata about the shared storage pool. The minimum disk space requirement for the repository disk is 1 GB.
- At least one additional physical volume provides storage for the storage pool that is associated with the shared storage pool. The minimum disk space requirement for the physical volumes in the storage pool is 10 GB.
- Inventory
is collected and current for the VIOS operating system that you want
to use in the shared storage pool.

To create a shared storage pool, follow these steps:
Procedure
- From the Plug-ins tab on the Home page of the web interface, click Power Systems Management. The Power Systems™ Management summary page is displayed.
- On the Power Systems Management summary page page, click the Create shared storage pool task. You can also access the Create shared storage pool task by typing create shared into the finder field in the IBM FSM Explorer page.
- Follow the instructions in the Create Shared Storage Pool wizard. The wizard guides you through selecting VIOS virtual servers to include in the shared storage pool and selecting physical volumes to create an associated storage pool.
