Routing considerations

When you configure any of the protocols for event notifications, consider these routing decisions.

Routing considerations for event notification and Network Time Protocol

The system supports the following protocols that make outbound connections:
  • Email
  • Simple Network Mail Protocol (SNMP)
  • Syslog
  • Network Time Protocol (NTP).
These protocols operate only on a port that is configured with a system management IP address. When it is making outbound connections, the system uses the following routing decisions:
  • If the destination IP address is in the same subnet as one of the system management IP addresses, the system sends the packet immediately through the Ethernet port with the matching subnet as the destination IP.
  • If the destination IP address does not belong to the same subnet as any configured system management IP address, the system forwards the packet to a default gateway. The system selects the default gateway that is associated with the Ethernet port, which has the lowest port number among the ports that are configured with a system management IP address.

When you configure any of these protocols for event notifications, use these routing decisions to ensure that error notification works correctly if the network fails.
