Designing workflows

A workflow definition is a template of a business process.

It has the following main elements:

Graphical map

A workflow definition shows the sequences of steps that are needed to complete the business process. The steps represent each specific activity or task in the business process.

Step specification

A workflow definition specifies the following items (among others):

  • Who processes the work for the step
  • The step processor application that the participant is to use
  • The attachments that are required
  • What data is necessary
  • What responses the participant can choose

Route logic

A workflow definition contains routing logic that specifies how work advances from one step to the next.
