Retrieving data sets
Use the Retrieve Data Set action to find and add data sets to the MVS™ Files subsystem.
Ensure that the name of data set that you are working with contains at least two qualifiers
such as NEW.JCL. Otherwise, errors might occur.
The Retrieve Data Set window searches
the MVS Files subsystem for data
sets that match a search string that you enter. This function is similar
to, but not identical to, the ISPF option 3.4, Data Set List Utility.
The following list shows some of the differences between Retrieve
Data Set and ISPF 3.4:
- Retrieve Data Set does not show data sets that are in the catalog but not on the volume.
- Retrieve Data Set shows VSAM clusters, but does not show their index and data components, or their alternate index, data components, or path. The Properties view for VSAM clusters shows the index, data components, alternate index, and path.
- Retrieve Data Set shows generation data groups under the Retrieved Data Sets filter. Generation data sets are shown under their respective generation data groups.
- The wildcard character * functions differently in the Retrieve Data Set window and ISPF. In the Retrieve Data Set window, an * in a search string can cross qualifier boundaries. The search string USERID.*O*, for example, matches both USERID.LOAD and USERID.TEST.COBOL in the Retrieve Data Set window, but matches only USERID.LOAD in ISPF 3.4.
1 For IDz users, the MVS Files subsystem Properties view also displays the following information:
- Property Group Name
- The name of the property group that is associated with the subsystem.
- Property Group Overrides
- Whether any values in the property group were overridden: Yes or No.
