Creating PowerReports drill through charts

Use drill mode in PowerReports to navigate through levels of data in a chart that contains information that is stored in a hierarchy.

The following examples outline some scenarios where you can use drill mode:
  • A column chart where you can drill down from a year to a quarter to a month
  • A matrix where you can drill through from a group to a location and then to the account
  • A chart where you can drill through data type categories to data types and then to account styles

Enabling drill mode

Drill mode is activated on the visualization and the drill mode icons are displayed next to the visualization under any of the following conditions:
  • If a chart contains multiple fields in any of the non value field slots, for example, the x or y axis, legend, and so on.
  • If a matrix contains multiple fields in any of the row or column field slots.

If drill through results in a chart are filtered, then all charts where interactions are turned on are also be affected.

The following list explains the icons in order:

Drill up

Click to drill up one step from the drill level that you are on. It is disabled when you are at the top level.

Drill down

Click to highlight the drill down icon, and you can select any single category in a chart or table to drill down to the next level for only that category. All other categories are filtered out of the visualization while you are drilled down in a category.

Click the icon a second time to disable the drill down function.

Next hierarchy level

Click to drill the entire chart down a single level. For example, if you click the next hierarchy icon on a chart at the top-level hierarchy, all values show only the second level of the hierarchy.

Expand all one level

Click to drill the entire chart down a single level but retain all categories that are referenced from the level above.

When clicked, each labeled category is expanded and prefixed to the name of the category at the next level down in the hierarchy.
