Configuring CRREM ratios and intensity targets

To effectively use the IBM® Envizi ESG Suite CRREM Scenario Modeler, you must first configure data type groups and ratios, and load CRREM intensity targets into Envizi ESG Suite.

About this task

Before you follow the steps in the procedure, review the following information:

To report and calculate actual emission intensities or energy intensities to compare with CRREM intensity targets, configure a ratio in Envizi ESG Suite to map to each of the CRREM target benchmarks. The ratio is a configuration that instructs the platform to perform intensity calculations based on actual, estimated, or accrued consumption data. A ratio consists of a numerator and a denominator, where each is represented by a data type group in Envizi ESG Suite. A data type group is created by aggregating and converting a collection of data type primary measures into a common reporting unit.

The CRREM Modeling Tool PowerReport include all ratios that have been set up in your organization. Apply an appropriate ratio naming convention, for example, include the text CRREM in the ratio name, to make it easier to identify the required ratio in reports.

The following table contains a list of recommended ratio configurations for the CRREM Modeling Tool:

Table 1. Recommended ratio configurations for the CRREM Modeling Tool
Ratio name Ratio numerator Ratio denominator
CO2e per m2 for CRREM A data type group that includes all data types in your organization that contribute to reportable CO2e emissions but excluding fugitive emissions.

Reporting measure of the data type group must be set to CO2e in kg to be aligned with CRREM.

A data type group that includes one or more data types in your organization to represent the total floor area of buildings in square meters for the purpose of calculating CRREM intensities.

Reporting measure of the data type group must be set to Area in m2 to be aligned with CRREM.

Energy per m2 for CRREM A data type group that includes all data types in your organization that contribute to reportable energy.

Reporting measure of the data type group must be set to Energy in kWh to be aligned with CRREM.

A data type group that includes one or more data types in your organization to represent the total floor area of buildings in square meters for the purpose of calculating CRREM intensities.

Reporting measure of the data type group must be set to Area in m2 to be aligned with CRREM.

GHGe per m2 for CRREM A data type group that includes all data types in your organization that contribute to reportable CO2e emissions including fugitive emissions if the data is available.

CRREM intensity targets need to be obtained from CRREM’s official website, from either the CRREM Risk Assessment Tool or the CRREM Global Pathway dataset. You transform the CRREM intensity targets into location level intensity targets, and then upload them into Envizi. The loaded intensity targets are then fed into the CRREM Modeling Tool together with actual intensities configured as ratios, to enable reporting and tracking against CRREM intensity targets in the report.

CRREM provides yearly figures for its intensity targets. To track location performance by month, you can convert the yearly intensity targets into monthly intensity targets. Either divide the yearly figure by 12, or work out the monthly values by using the number of days in each month in proportion, for example, divide by 365 and then multiply by the number of days in the month. Intensity targets in Envizi also follow a monthly structure to facilitate reporting and target tracking on a monthly basis.

The following table contains a list of recommended intensity target configurations for the CRREM Modeling Tool. For more information about intensity targets, see the related link.

Procedure

  • Configure ratios and data type groups.
For more information, see the Table 1 table, Setting up ratio and rates, and Setting up data type groups.
  • Configure intensity targets:
    1. Configure an intensity target container for each ratio.
To ensure that the target is included in the CRREM Modeling Tool, set the Target type value to Intensity/Ratio Target [Fixed] - CRREM 1.5C. For more information about configuring intensity targets, see Configuring intensity targets.
    2. To upload location level CRREM monthly intensity target values into Envizi by using a template, right-click an intensity target and click Generate Blank Template.
    3. In the Run Report dialog, select the following values:
      • Select the Group or Location that you want to set up the intensity targets for.
      • For Filter By #1, select Location
      • For Filter By #2, select Monthly.
The generated template should have most of the details populated, such as the target name, start and end period.
    4. In the Target Value column, enter your desired monthly CRREM intensity target values derived from either the CRREM Risk Assessment Tool or the CRREM Global Pathway dataset, based on the location’s type, country and year. You need to do this only for a subset of countries and property types, based on your portfolio coverage.
    5. To prepare for upload to Envizi ESG Suite, save the template file as an Excel file with the following naming convention:
      Blank_Target_Data_your_text.xlsx
    6. After you have populated the template with the desired intensity target values, upload the file to Envizi ESG Suite by using your preferred data file loading method, for example, manual data file upload, hub email, SFTP, or S3 and so on.
    7. Check the data upload status in the Files Processed - Accounts & Setup page.
For more information, see Troubleshooting uploaded files

Results

Similar to other data in the platform, allow a 24 hour lead time for any changes that you make to the data type groups, ratios, and intensity targets to be reflected in the monthly dataset and the PowerReport.

What to do next

View actual intensity values and compare them to intensity target values in the CRREM Scenario Modeler PowerReport.
