Software Updates - How to update your software
In the Software Updates application you can update software version for IBM i, AIX, and Storage. Only certain products can be upgraded on ESS.

Selecting the Brand
- To initiate a software update go to the 'Brand selection' section. The 'Brand selection' section is on the right side of the page under the 'Notifications' and 'My Profile' menu.
- You can select the brand - Power IBM i or Power AIX, in the 'Brand selection' section.
- Confirm your selection with the arrow sign.
- The results after are based on that selection. Only customer numbers with records associated to the selected brand are available.
The Software Updates application does not support products that are ordered through Passport Advantage.
Selecting a customer number
Select the Customer Number for which you want to perform updates. You can select "All available" bulk option or a specific customer number.
- Select All available - you are presented with the list of IBM i and AIX systems for ALL the customer numbers for which you are authorized (by the registration process) to perform this transaction. This list can be extensive and take a while to load.
- Select a specific customer number from the list - this option narrows down the search. You are presented with a list of IBM i and AIX systems for the customer number that is selected for which you are authorized to perform this transaction.
Selecting a machine type and a hardware serial number
You can select the specific IBM i or AIX system for which the entitled software update is being ordered.
- Click the Machine Type/Serial Number dropdown list
- A list of machine types and serial numbers for which you are authorized is displayed, based on your selection.
- Select a machine type and a serial number to continue entering your order.
- If you do not see the wanted machine type and serial number combination in the displayed list, contact your administrator or customer focal point. They can help to add it to your list of authorizations.
- Upon selecting a machine type and serial number, you are presented with a list of software products that are entitled and you can update the software for that specific system.
Selecting the products to upgrade
You are presented with a list of software products that are entitled for updates for the selected customer number and machine type serial.
- If there is discrepancy between IBM's inventory records and what you feel is installed (and entitled) on a certain system, contact your IBM sales Representative to resolve the difference. The inventory records must match in to continue with the transaction.
- Select the appropriate versions and feature codes
- Click 'Continue'.
Selecting a language
This step is available for products, which are language-enabled.
- Select a main language for your order.
- The language selected as the main language is by default the individual language for each product, unless the product is unavailable in that choice. In that case, select an alternative language.
IBM i V7 products use language groups. The list of languages for each group is available in the help section topic IBM i V7 language groups
Terms and Conditions
Before you are able to submit a software update for any product, you need to accept the Terms and Conditions. After you review them, you need to click 'I agree'.
Order summary - selecting the delivery method
Before you submit the order, you need to select the delivery method:

Download now - place the upgrade order and instantly download the newly ordered software products.

Download later - place the upgrade order and download the software products in a later moment. The software entitlements will be updated. An email confirmation will be sent, and software keys (for IBM i) will be ready for download at your request.
Submitting the order
Verify that everything is correct and click 'Submit' to submit your order to IBM for the entitled software update. An order confirmation message with the order numbers will be sent to your email address and to any other email addresses you might have included.
