Plan a traditional project
Learn about the concepts and tasks
that support the traditional, or formal, planning process.
In
a formal project management process, project development proceeds
in sequential phases: Requirements, Design, Implementation, and Testing.
Team members complete each phase of the process before beginning the
next phase. Each phase has specific milestones and target dates, which
the team must achieve to complete the project at the required time.
Learning objectives
In this tutorial, you will learn about the following information:- The processes that govern the formal project management methodology
- How to create a traditional project plan
Time required
30 minutes- Introduction: Plan a traditional project
In a traditional project plan, the overall project scope is defined in the release plan for the project. From the project release plan, you assign work to the phase plans for each project phase or iteration. - Lesson 1: Create a release plan for the project
In this lesson, you create a project release plan. You also define the overall project schedule and scope. - Lesson 2: Add resources to the project plan
In this lesson, you identify the resources to work on the project. You add the resources to the project and specify the dates and hours for which they are required. Choose from the users who are added to the project area. - Lesson 3: Identify and plan for risks
In this lesson, you learn how to identify, evaluate, and document risks in the project. To mitigate or counter a risk, you must create risk actions. - Lesson 4: Define project work
In this lesson, you use the project requirements and plan items to create the work items for each project phase. You also assign the plan items and work items to the project phases. In an iterative development model, you can assign implementation work items to the implementation or development iterations. - Lesson 5: Create phase plans and the plan schedule
In this lesson, you create phase or iteration plans so that you can see the plan items and work items that are assigned to each phase or iteration. - Lesson 6: Assign owners to work items
In this lesson, you assign owners to each work item from the list of resources that are assigned to the project release plan. - Lesson 7: Take a snapshot of the planned schedule
In this lesson, you take a planned snapshot of the committed plan. This snapshot is the snapshot of the plan after resources are assigned to the work items. A plan can have only one planned snapshot. - Summary: Plan a traditional project
In this tutorial, you learned to plan a traditional project.
