Manual test script steps

In IBM® Engineering Test Management, you can add multiple steps to a test script.

You can execute the steps of a manual test script in any order apart from the existing sequential order. To enable this option, set the required administrator preference on the Manage Project Properties > Execution Preferences page. You can filter the manual steps table in a similar way to other table views. You can enter filter arguments and click the Run icon to filter the manual steps. The filter control is available for all the custom columns of the script. The step filtering is available in the Stack of manual test scripts.

You can resize the columns of a manual steps table beyond the page width. The table columns are resized to their actual width and no other column width is affected. A horizontal scroll bar is shown if the table width exceeds the page width. Open the Change Column Display Settings dialog and select the Actual width: Columns can expand beyond the page width option.

A step has the following default columns: Description, Expected Results, and Attachment/Links. In the test case execution record (TCER) view, the following columns are also available:
  • Passed script steps
  • Failed script steps
  • PermFailed script steps
  • Inconclusive script steps
  • Attempted script steps
  • Deferred script steps
  • Blocked script steps
  • Skipped script steps

The dashboard widget Execution Status by Number of Steps shows the execution status by points for test case execution records, test case results, test suite execution records, and test suite results. This widget always shows the latest information and does not require a data warehouse. For execution records, the number of steps is calculated based on the last result of the execution record.

Note: The scope of the browser search feature is to find all the text displayed on a page. To search for a text in the test script steps that are not displayed, scroll down to load the test script steps in the display before you use the browser search feature. To search for a text in the entire test script, scroll down to the last test script step.

Step types

You can choose from three types of steps: Execution, Reporting, and Information. By default, a step is of type execution. When you author a manual test script, you can add a step by using the row-level menu or a keyboard shortcut Ctrl + D + Enter.

An Information step is a non-executable, read-only step while execution occurs. In a test script, an Information step cannot be the only step. To enable an Information step type for manual test scripts, set the required administrator preference on the Manage Project Properties > Test Script Preferences page. If you select the Show only the Description, you will not have to enter placeholder content in the Results column of the step.
