Adding a document break element

You can use document break elements to start a new document-style report in the output document-style report at a designated point in the content or to start a new worksheet. When you're generating document-style reports with large amounts of data, document breaks can divide the generation of output document-style reports into smaller documents. For example, you might include a glossary document as part of your main document-style report, or you might put each artifact (requirement or test case) in a separate sheet of your workbook document.

About this task

Restriction: Document breaks are only supported for Microsoft Word and MicrosoftMicrosoft Excel output and are ignored for other output types.

Procedure

  1. Add a document break element to the template content editor by one of the following methods:
    • In the Palette view, select a Doc break icon Document break element and drag it into the template content editor.
    • In the editor area, right-click and select Insert > Doc break icon Document break.
    • In the Outline view, right-click Content and select Insert > Doc break icon Document break.
  2. Select the document break element.
  3. In the Properties view, select the General tab.
  4. In the Name field, enter a name for the document break element, such as Doc 1.
For Excel output, although you can use up to 31 characters, make this name short enough to fit on the next tab of the worksheet.
  5. Click File > Save As or click the Save icon.

What to do next

For Microsoft Word output, you must set the multipart property in your document specification. See Generating large document-style reports for instructions.

When you generate the output, the output file combines all the document-style reports.

Document-style reports that are created with document breaks have the same extension as the main document-style report configured in the Word output. For Word, the default extension is .doc, which you can change in the output properties in the Launcher view. For Excel, the extension is .xlsx.
