You can add elements such as paragraphs, lists, images,
footnotes, or a table of contents to your template. There are multiple
ways to insert elements and you can select the one that allows you
to work most efficiently.
Before you begin
As you design the template, consider the outputs that you plan to
generate the document-style report into. Some elements and their formatting properties might not
display consistently across all formats. When you work on your template, consult the Element properties reference by output format and preview the
output periodically as you work.
About this task
There are multiple places in the user interface from which you can insert elements into a
template. You can review the benefits of each and choose the method that you prefer.

If you do not see the Palette view in Document Studio, you can add it by clicking . If you do not see the Outline view in Document Studio, you can add it by clicking .
You can insert elements into a template from the Outline view, the Palette
view, or the Template Content editor.
Procedure
- To insert elements into a template from the Outline view:
- In the Outline view, right-click Content
or another existing element that is a child of Content.
- Select Insert.
A context-sensitive list of available elements displays.
- Select an element to add to the template.
- To insert elements into a template from the Palette view:
- You can drag the element.
- In the Palette view, click and hold an element. When you move the cursor
into the Template Content editor, the cursor changes from an arrow to an arrow with a plus sign.

- Drag your cursor to the Template Content editor and release the element in the location to place
the element.
- You can select and place the element.
- In the Palette view, select an element. When you move the cursor into
the Template Content editor, the cursor changes from an arrow to an arrow with a plus sign.

- Click the location in the template content editor to place the element. You can click multiple
locations to place the same element into multiple places in the template.
- To remove an element from your cursor, click the selected element in the
Palette view.
For some elements, you can place the element inside another element. For example, you can
place a Row element inside a Table element to add a row to a table. Not all elements can be put
inside others. When the cursor changes to an icon indicating that you cannot insert the element

, you cannot insert the element into the location you selected. For example, you cannot add
a Row element to a Container element.
Tip: Because IBM Engineering Lifecycle Optimization - Publishing is an Eclipse application, you can use the auto-scroll feature to place elements
into locations in the template that are not visible in the Template Content editor.
- Select an element and move your cursor or drag an element into the Template Content editor.
- Move the cursor on the template content editor, depending on which
direction you want to scroll.
- Pause at the edge of the Template Content editor. The editor begins to scroll.
- Move your cursor back into the Template Content editor when the location you want to place the
element is visible.
- Place or release the element in the template.
- To insert elements into a template from the Template Content editor:
- In the Template Content editor, right-click the template area or an existing
element.
- Select Insert.
A context-sensitive list of available elements displays.
- Select an element to add to the template.
Tip: As you add more elements to your template, your template might become crowded. You
can zoom in and out of the template editor by pressing the Ctrl + keys to
zoom in and Ctrl - to zoom out. Alternatively, you can use the mouse wheel
and the Ctrl key to zoom in or out. To reset the zoom back to 100%, press Ctrl 0
.
What to do next
In the Properties view, enter values
to customize the properties for each element you inserted. To open
the Properties view, click .If you place an element in the wrong place, in the
Template Content editor, you can select the element and drag it to
the correct place. To remove an element from the template, select
it and press the Delete key.
