Using global components and configurations

This section describes how to create and manage global components and configurations in the Global Configuration Management application.

Start using a global configuration project
To join a global configuration project, a project administrator must add you to the project area as a team member. You can then open a project from your user dashboard.
Workflow for global configurations
A configuration is a set of versioned artifacts. Traditionally, artifacts are files that are managed by a single application, such as the Requirements Management (RM) application. Global configurations enable multiple applications to contribute artifacts to a larger hierarchy of configurations. Use the workflow to understand an overview about how to set up global configurations and use them.
Tags, attribute values, and links
Use tags, custom attributes, and links to describe and differentiate global components. Use these items, and optionally branch values, to do the same for global configurations. Use tags to search for global configurations and components, and to filter when you add a global configuration.
Creating a component to establish a work context
A component represents physical or logical pieces of the system your team is working on. For example, you might create a component for a physical piece called Handheld Meter Reader or you might create a component for a logical piece called Meter Reader Server. Each of these components might have several configurations (streams and baselines).
Creating, renaming, and deleting tags for global configurations and components
Tags are strings without spaces or commas and are project-area specific. Define tags so that team members easily find and organize global configurations and components in the Global Configuration Management application. Delete and rename tags as needed by your project.

Tags, custom attributes, branch values, and links provide ways for you to find, organize, and describe global configurations and components.
Finding global configurations by using queries
Build queries to find global configurations that meet the attribute conditions you specify. With queries, you can work more efficiently by selecting multiple configurations at a time to complete tasks such as editing attributes or tagging configurations.
Viewing configurations in a tree view
Use the tree view to see a hierarchy of configurations from this and other contributing IBM® Engineering Lifecycle Management (Engineering Lifecycle Management) applications. You can also sort configurations by name or contribution order (to fix unintentional component skew). A configuration that gathers configurations from across applications is called a global configuration.

You can quickly open IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management local configurations by using the Global Configuration Management user interface.

Personal Streams in the Global Configuration Management application
A personal stream contains your changes only and is modifiable by only you or an administrator. Use a personal stream to privately test one or more insulated changes before you deliver them to a shared stream. You can create a personal stream from any global stream in the Global Configuration Management application.
Finding sensitive data and data spills
To find data spills or sensitive data in global configurations, components, and user-defined queries, run the repotools-gc dumpArtifacts command and then search its output. If the sensitive data must be deleted, you can then scrub or delete the items.
Deleting sensitive data
You can remove classified or sensitive data from, or scrub, global configurations and components (including their change event history), and also delete user-defined queries that contain sensitive information.
