Using components in Engineering Test Management and DOORS® Next applications

Learn how to use components to group artifacts into smaller collections.

Components
Components represent a collection of versioned artifacts within a project area. For example, instead of working with all the artifacts from the project in one stream (for example, that represents a physical piece called a Handheld Meter Reader), you can use a component to represent a smaller collection of artifacts (for example, to represent a smaller physical piece such as a Sensor in the handheld meter reader).
Administering components in the Engineering Test Management application
In projects that are enabled for configuration management, you can manage components for your project if you have been assigned that permission.
Cloning test artifacts
Reorganize how artifacts are grouped in your project area by cloning them from one component into another. When you clone an artifact, a new version is added to the stream of the component that you work in. To avoid adding extra artifacts to stream, when you clone a duplicate artifact, the system does not clone its source artifact.
Referenced artifacts when cloning in the Engineering Test Management application
When you clone an artifact in the Engineering Test Management application, the system also clones any referenced artifacts. The dependent artifacts, which were archived are also cloned in the new component stream because when a referenced artifact is archived or deleted, its reference remains. The cloned archived artifacts are also in archived state in the new component stream.

In projects that are enabled for configuration management, as configuration administrator, you can manage components for your project.
