Setting up email

The IBM Engineering Requirements Management DOORS (DOORS ) client can send notification emails of failed login attempts and updates to the status of change proposals. For example, a notification email can be sent to a user when one of their proposals is accepted or rejected. Emails that are sent by DOORS always include the database name and the database URL.

Before you begin

Open the database properties. For more information, see Configuring the DOORS database.

Procedure

  1. On the General tab, in the SMTP mail server field, type the name of the SMTP mail server that you want the DOORS client to use.
  2. Optional: In the mail account field, type the mail account that you want the SMTP mail server to use.
If the SMTP server has security controls that require a user account in a valid format, type a mail account.

If you leave this field blank, DOORS uses the default mail account DOORS.MAIL.SERVER@no-reply.com. The default mail account does not exist and is not in a valid email format. It is used by DOORS because some SMTP servers require user account authentication.

Email messages that are sent by the DOORS client display "change proposal system for <projectname>" in the From field.

Note: If you update the email account specified in this field, it does not update the email account from where the DOORS email notifications are sent.
  3. Optional: Enter a value in the Minimum client version field.
Important: To enable secured SMTP, DOORS client version 9.7.2.10 or higher is required. This version of DOORS client allows you to configure STARTTLS and Port for secure SMTP.
Note: As secured SMTP is supported from version 9.7.2.10, if a version earlier than 9.7.2.10 is entered or no value is entered, the STARTTLS and Port are disabled and SMTP communication occurs over an unsecured connection using the port 25.
  4. For version 9.7.2.10 and later, select True from the STARTTLS list to issue a STARTTLS command before authentication.
Setting this value to true initiates a secure SMTP connection between DOORS client and SMTP server.
Note: The DOORS client necessitates the server certificate to be present in the Windows certificate store for secure SMTP communication. For information on importing a certificate, see Importing Certificates. Make sure that you select the Intermediate certificates authorities option for Place all certificates in the following store option when choosing a certificate store.
  5. Specify the port you want to use in the Port field.
If False is selected from the STARTTLS list, you can still specify a value in the Port field. However, SMTP communication occurs over an unsecured connection.
Important: the secure SMTP feature is currently not supported for DXL functions.
  6. Optional: In the Prefix e-mails with text field type alternative text to include in emails that are sent by DOORS .
By default, automatic emails have the prefix: The following is a notification message from DOORS - please do not reply as it was sent from an unattended mailbox.
  7. Click OK.
