Linking artifacts to architecture elements

In IBM® Engineering Requirements Management DOORS® Next, you can link requirement artifacts to architecture elements that are stored in an Architecture Management application such as IBM Engineering Systems Design Rhapsody® - Model Manager. You can use either the Explore or Search tabs to create the links. In the Links sidebar section of a requirement artifact, you can view architecture elements that are linked to requirement artifacts.

Before you begin

Add an association between the DOORS Next project area and the Architecture Management project area. The project areas must be registered with each other for link creation.

About this task

You can link requirement artifacts to the architecture elements if the associated Architecture Management application supports creating them by using OSLC APIs.
Restriction: You cannot link artifacts between different global configurations.

Procedure

  1. Open a requirement artifact in the editor mode and expand the Links section in the sidebar.
  2. Click the Add Link to Artifact icon and select a link type to link requirement artifacts to the architecture elements:
    • Derives Architecture Element
    • Refined By Architecture Element
    • Satisfied By Architecture Element
    • Traced By Architecture Element

Create Link window opens. By default, an Artifact Container (project area) is selected.

  3. Optional: In the Create Link window, you can change the Link Type and Artifact Container if necessary.
  4. In the Create Link window, enter the text in the Select Component text box and click Search.
Note: You can enter a full or partial name in the Search text box to get the list of Matching Components.
    Select components name
  5. Optional: Click the Clear search input icon to clear the text in the select component text box. When the text is cleared, you can enter a text and search for the components.
Note: The Search button is available only when the text is entered in the text box.
  6. Select a component from the Matching Components list.
  7. To create the links, you must select the architecture elements under the Explorer or Search tabs in the Select Artifacts text box.
    Select artifacts under explorer tab
Note: You cannot create links for the selected artifacts under the Explorer and Search tabs at a time. Links are created only to the selected artifacts in the tab you click the OK button.
    Select artifacts under search tab
  8. To select the architecture elements under the Explorer tab, you need to collapse the components.
  9. To select the architecture elements under Search tab, enter the text in the Search text box.
Note: You can use an asterisk (*) or a question mark (?) as wildcard character to get close matches with the search term that you are looking for. However, you cannot search architecture elements by using the wildcard character without any search text.
  10. Click Search or press Enter to filter the matching artifacts that are available for the text entered.
Note: The Search button becomes available only when a text is entered in the Search text box.
  11. Optional: Click Filter by element type and enter a text in the Architecture Element Type text box.
Note: The text used as the element type is not case-sensitive. You can use uppercase and lowercase characters or combination of both. The text box supports comma separated values. You can use a comma to enter more than one filter type to filter the search results. For example, Action, Package. It displays model elements of type "Action" and "Package".

    Architecture Element Type=Action, Package

It displays architecture elements of type "Action" and "Package".

Select one of the following options to get the results for architecture elements:

Show the exact matches: Returns architecture elements that exactly match the search text. By default, this option is selected.

Show all possible matches: Returns architecture elements that closely or exactly match the search text with the Name or Label values.

Note: When you toggle between these options, the search result is updated depending on the search criteria. The last selection is remembered, and the same option remains selected on the next login.
  12. Click Apply or press Enter.
Note: The Apply button becomes available only when a text is entered in the Architecture Element Type text box.
  13. The search result is displayed. The result is displayed based on the text entered for the type of the architecture elements.
Note: The search result is displayed in Name or Label mode. By default, the Name mode is selected. So, the result is displayed in the Name mode. To see the result in Label mode, select the Label Mode checkbox on the Architecture Management - Settings page.
  14. Optional: Click the Edit icon to edit the filter text that is applied on the search results or enter a new element type as filter.
Note: The Edit icon is available only when the filter is already applied on the search results. When the filter text is cleared, the Edit icon is not available.

Once the filter is applied, it displays the applied filter type next to the architecture element type label.

  15. Select the architecture elements and click OK.
Note: You can also select multiple artifacts under the Explorer and Search tabs.
