The System page displays the major
hardware components of the DS8000® storage
system and shows the status of the system hardware.
You can access actions such as controlling how the system is powered on or
off, modifying the I/O port protocols, modifying Easy Tier settings, or viewing system properties.
You can view the properties of each hardware component by hovering over the illustration of the
component. Click on the illustration of the component to display an enlarged view and its current
state.
Storage system attributes
- Name
- The name of the DS8000 storage system as set by the
administrator.
- State
- The current state of the DS8000 storage system as
follows:
- Online
- The storage system is operating normally.
- Service required
- The storage system is online, but one or more calls home were initiated to IBM® Hardware Support because of issues that remain to be solved.
- Offline
- The system is powered on, but is offline and is not available for operation or
communication.
- Install pending
- A software upgrade is in process.
- Service in progress
- The system is being repaired.
- Powering on
- The system is powering on for operation.
- Powering off
- The system is powering off.
- Powered off
- The system is powered off.
- Hardware redundancy loss
- The system detects the loss of a redundant hardware device. A call home was initiated to IBM Hardware Support.
Note: Hardware redundancy involves the use of
identical functional units, such as multiple drives or power supply systems that provide data
security and a certain degree of fault tolerance in case of hardware failures.
- Release
- The release version of the IBM system software, for
example, R7.4.
- Product
- The product name of the IBM storage system, for example,
DS8870.
- MTM
- The machine type and model of the DS8000 storage
system.
- S/N
- The unique serial number for the DS8000 storage
system.
- Machine signature
- A string of characters that identifies a DS8000 storage
system. The machine signature is used to retrieve license keys from the IBM Data storage feature activation (DSFA) website.
- WWNN
- The unique 16-character identifier that represents the worldwide node name. It is used by the
host to identify the storage system.
- Processors
- The type of processor that is installed in the processor node of the storage system, for
example, POWER7® or POWER7+™.
- Memory
- The amount of raw cache processor memory that is installed in the storage system as measured in
decimal gigabytes (GB).
- Storage capacity
- The raw storage capacity of the storage system.
- I/O ports
- The number and type of ports on the storage system that connect to hosts, switches, or other
storage systems, either directly or through a switch.
- Last power on
- The date and time when the DS8000 storage system was
last powered on.
- Installed
- The date and time when the DS8000 storage system was
initially installed.
Storage system actions
- Rename
- Change the name of your DS8000 storage system.
- Modify Power Control Mode
- Change the power control mode of your storage system.
- Automatic
- Control power supply to the storage system by the external wall switch.
- Manual
- Control power supply to the storage system by using the Power Off action
on the System page.
- System z managed
- Enable a System z host to control power supply to the storage system.
- Modify I/O Port Protocols
- Select the protocol that is used by I/O ports to connect the storage system to a host or to
another storage system.
- Modify Easy Tier Settings
- Configure Easy Tier to improve performance by managing or monitoring volume capacity placement
in pools. You can also enable the Easy Tier Server and Easy Tier Heat Map Transfer utilities.
- Refresh Cache
- Update the information that is displayed in the DS8000 Storage
Management GUI by refreshing the
browser cache.
- Power Off
- Turn off power to the DS8000 storage system as
required.
- Properties
- View the properties of the DS8000 storage system, such
as the state and system memory. For a complete list of properties and definitions, see Attributes.
Hardware resources and attributes
- Frame
- Use the frame selector view (on the right side of the System page) to
select an individual frame view of a multi-frame storage system for display, if applicable.
Note: The frame selector is not displayed, if the storage system has only one frame.
- Node
- The DS8000 storage system has two processor nodes. Each
node consists of a processor and the microcode that runs on it.
- ID
- The node identifier. There are two nodes on the DS8000
storage system (Node 0 and Node 1).
- State
- The current state of the nodes as follows:
- Online
- The node is operating normally.
- Initializing
- The node operation is starting and is not yet fully functional.
- Service required
- The node is online, but requires service. A call home was initiated to IBM Hardware Support.
- Service in progress
- The node is being serviced.
- Drive service required
- One or more drives that are online require service. A call home was initiated to IBM Hardware Support.
- Offline
- The node is offline and non-operational. A call home was initiated to IBM Hardware Support.
- Release
- The version of the licensed machine code (LMC) or hardware bundle on the node.
- Processor
- The type and configuration of the processor on the node.
- Memory
- The amount of raw cache memory that is installed in the node.
- HMC
- The Hardware Management Console (HMC) provides a standard interface on a dedicated console to
control managed systems. The HMC communicates with managed systems through service applications to
gather information, and then sends the data to IBM for
analysis. One HMC is located inside the base frame. A second external HMC can be ordered to provide redundancy.
- Name
- The name of the HMC as defined by the user.
- State
- The status of the HMC as follows:
- Online
- The HMC is operating normally.
- Code updating
- The HMC software code is being updated.
- Service required
- The HMC is online, but requires serve. A call home was initiated to IBM Hardware Support.
- Offline with redundancy
- HMC redundancy is compromised. A call home was initiated to IBM Hardware Support.
- Offline
- The HMC is offline and non-operational.
- Release
- The version of the licensed machine code (LMC) installed on the HMC.
- Host address
- The IP address for the host system of the HMC.
- Role
- The primary or secondary HMC.
- Location
- The physical location of the HMC. If the HMC is in the base frame, the name of the storage
system is displayed. If the HMC is external, the location is identified as "off-system".
- Storage enclosure
- A specialized chassis that houses and powers the drives in the DS8000 storage system. The storage enclosure also provides the mechanism to
allow the drives to communicate with one or more host systems.
- ID
- The enclosure number for the storage enclosure.
- State
- The current state of the storage enclosure as follows:
- Online
- The storage enclosure is operating normally.
- Service requested
- A service request to IBM was generated for one or more
drives within the storage enclosure.
- Service required
- The storage enclosure is online, but requires service. A call home was initiated to IBM Hardware Support.
- Service in progress
- The storage enclosure is being repaired.
- Offline
- The storage enclosure requires service. A call home was initiated to IBM Hardware Support.
- Drive capacity
- The raw capacity of the drives in the storage enclosure.
- Drive class
- The classification and speed in RPMs (if specified) of a drive in the storage enclosure.
Examples include enterprise 10k, enterprise 15k, nearline 7.2k, and flash drives.
- Installed
- The time stamp that indicates when the storage enclosure was installed.
- S/N
- The serial number of the storage enclosure.
- Drive
- A data storage device. A drive can be either a magnetic disk drive (also called a hard disk
drive or HDD) or a flash drive.
- S/N
- The serial number of the drive.
- State
- The current state of the drive as follows:
- Online
- The drive is operating normally.
- Initializing
- The drive is being prepared for operation and is not yet fully functional.
- Service in progress
- The drive is being serviced.
- Offline
- The drive requires service. A call home was initiated to IBM Hardware Support.
- Array
- The ID of the array that the drive belongs to.
- Capacity
- The raw capacity of the drive.
- Class
- The class and speed of the drive.
- Interface
- The type and speed of the interface that is used by the drive.
- Firmware
- The level of firmware that is installed on the drive.
- I/O enclosure
- The enclosure that contains the I/O cards that are installed in the DS8000 storage system. The I/O cards transfer data into and out of the
system.
- Host adapter
- The I/O adapter that transfers data between the storage system and a host system.
- S/N
- The serial number of the host adapter.
- State
- The current state of the host adapter as follows:
- Online
- The host adapter is operating normally.
- Service required
- The host adapter is online but requires service. A call home was initiated to IBM Hardware Support.
- Service in progress
- The host adapter is being serviced.
- Offline
- The host adapter requires service. A call home was initiated to IBM Hardware Support.
- Type
- The interface type of the host adapter.
- Fibre Channel (SW)
- Shortwave Fibre Channel.
- Fibre Channel (LW, 4 km)
- Longwave Fibre Channel with a maximum of 4 km distance.
- Fibre Channel (LW, 10 km)
- Longwave Fibre Channel with a maximum of 10 km distance.
- Speed
- The speed of the host adapter.
- I/O port
- A port on the storage system that connects it to hosts, switches, or another storage system
either directly or through a switch.
- ID
- The identification number of the I/O port.
- State
- The current state of the I/O port as follows:
- Online
- The I/O port is operating normally.
- Unconfigured
- The I/O port protocol is not configured.
- Offline
- The I/O port requires service.
- Protocol
- One of three Fibre Channel protocols as follows:
- FC-AL
- A Fibre Channel arbitrated loop where devices are connected in a one-way loop ring topology. The
bandwidth on the loop is shared among all ports. Only two ports can communicate at a time on the
loop. One port wins arbitration and can open one other port.
- SCSI FCP
- A method for transferring SCSI commands with Fibre Channel protocol.
- FICON®
- Fibre Connection is a high-speed I/O interface for System z® host connections.
- WWPN
- The unique 16-digit hex number that represents the worldwide port number of the I/O port.
- Device adapter
- The I/O adapters that transfer data to and from the storage devices within the system.
- S/N
- The serial number of the device adapter.
- DA pair
- The identifier of the device adapter pair that the device adapter belongs to.
- State
- The current state of the device adapter as follows:
- Online
- The device adapter is operating normally.
- Service required
- The device adapter is online but requires service. A call home was initiated to IBM Hardware Support.
- Service in progress
- The device adapter is being serviced.
- Offline
- The device adapter requires service. A call home was initiated to IBM Hardware Support.
- UPS
- The uninterruptible power supply (UPS) supplies power to a frame enclosure. There are two UPSs
per frame. The UPS is installed between the commercial power supply and the storage system and is
designed to automatically keep the system functional if a commercial power failure occurs. If the
remaining battery power in the UPS reaches a certain level, the unit initiates an orderly shutdown
of system processing, as required.
- ID
- The enclosure number for the UPS.
- State
- The current state of the UPS as follows:
- Online
- The UPS is operating normally.
- Battery service required
- The UPS is online but one or more batteries require service. A call home was initiated to IBM Hardware Support.
- Battery service in progress
- One or more batteries are being serviced.
- Power communication service required
- The UPS is online but requires service for power communication. A call home was initiated to IBM Hardware Support.
- Power communication service in progress
- The UPS is being serviced to restore power communication.
- Service in progress
- The UPS is being serviced.
- Offline
- The UPS requires service. A call home was initiated to IBM
Hardware Support.
- Input power
- The type of electric power that is supplied to the storage
system.
- EPLD
- The extended power line disturbance protection feature. This option enables a storage facility
to continue operation through a power outage. that last either 4 seconds or 50 seconds, depending on
the following settings:
- Default
- Operation can continue through a power outage that lasts up to 4 seconds.
- EPLD (50 sec)
- Operation can continue through a power outage that lasts up to 50 seconds.
- Local/remote switch
- The setting of the physical local/remote power control switch that is on the back of the DS8000 frame. The switch controls whether the system is to be
turned off locally or by remote means.
- S/N
- The serial number of the UPS.
