Use approved ESD procedures to prevent damage.

Attention:

This procedure is not a stand-alone procedure. Customer disruption and damage to the hardware might occur when microcode and power boundaries are not in the proper conditions for this service action.
If a serviceable event FRU repair directed you to this procedure, the microcode and power boundaries are already set.
If a serviceable event FRU repair did not direct you to this procedure, see MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.

Notes:

All the cables and FRUs to be removed must be uniquely identified so they can be reinstalled correctly.

Before you begin

Attention: Fan modules are hot-pluggable FRUs. Ensure that you only remove one module at a time.

Procedure

To locate this FRU, take one of the following actions and then return here and continue to replace the FRU:
- If this FRU has a FRU identify indicator, use the FRU identify indicator, which is listed in MAP1240 Locating FRUs by using identify indicators.
  Note: There might be cases where the FRU failure or fencing conditions prevent the FRU LED indicator from being lit even if the FRU has power.
- Use the location code, which is listed in MAP1245 Finding FRUs by using location codes.
- If there is no FRU identify indicator or location code, you were sent here by an isolation MAP or symbolic FRU procedure. Use the information in that procedure and the figures in this procedure to locate the proper part to exchange.
Most, but not all, FRUs have identify indicators. Use the flashing amber or solid blue FRU identify indicators to ensure that you are working on the correct enclosure or FRU.
- The "light path" identify LEDs are a hierarchy of LEDs that can identify the enclosure, FRU, and even the FRU connector to which a cable is connected.
- For more information, refer to MAP1240 Locating FRUs by using identify indicators.
If applicable, open the front rack door.
Attach the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap. The ESD wrist strap must be connected to an unpainted metal surface until the service procedure is completed, and if applicable, until the service access cover is replaced.
Attention:
- Attach an electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap to the front ESD jack, to the rear ESD jack, or to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent the electrostatic discharge from damaging your hardware.
- When you use an ESD wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. An ESD wrist strap is used for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
- If you do not have an ESD wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds. If at any point in this service process you move away from the system, it is important to again discharge yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface for at least 5 seconds before you continue with the service process.

At the front of the rack, loosen the front screws that secure the storage enclosure to the rack.

Slide the storage enclosure into the service position.

1. Ensure that the screws inside the latches are not secured to the rack. Then, slide the storage enclosure out of the rack until the slides click and hold the enclosure unit securely.
2. Ensure that the cable management arm can move freely. Ensure that the cables at the rear of the storage enclosure do not catch or bind as you pull the enclosure unit into the service position.
Note: The rack stabilizer brackets must be attached to the rack before any drawer is installed or pulled out from the rack. Do not pull out more than one drawer at a time. The rack might become unstable when more than one drawer at a time is pulled out from the rack.
Open the fan access door by lifting the D-rings on top of the storage enclosure and turning them in a counterclockwise direction.

Look for the amber fault LED to identify the failed fan.

To remove a fan module, press in at the grip locations and lift the fan from the system.

Install the storage enclosure fan module

Procedure

To replace a fan module, lower the fan into the system and align the fan with the pins. Press the fan down until it is fully seated and level with the other modules.

Close the fan access door by lifting the D-rings on top of the storage enclosure, turning them in a clockwise direction, and pushing the D-rings downward to the fan access door. Ensure that the fan access door is closed.

Unlock the blue rail safety latches by pushing them inward.
Slide the storage enclosure back into place, then push the storage enclosure unit back into the rack until both release latches lock the enclosure into position. Ensure that the cable management arm can move freely.
