Attention: DO NOT use this procedure to service an operating storage system. This procedure is to be used only to remove the processor enclosure time-of-day batteries from an inactive DS8000 system for recycling or reclamation. To service a BSM set in an active DS8000, refer to service documentation.

About this task

To remove the time-of-day battery from a processor enclosure for recycling, complete the following steps:

Procedure

  1. Ensure that you have the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap attached. If not, attach it now.
  2. Remove the service access cover. (See Figure 1.)
    1. Release the latch by pushing the release latch  A  in the direction shown.
    2. Slide the cover  B  off the system unit. When the front of the service access cover has cleared the upper frame ledge, lift the cover up and off the system unit.

  3. Remove the time-of-day battery from its corresponding slot  A  on the system backplane. (See Figure 2.) Ensure to record the orientation of the polarity of the battery so that you can insert it with the same orientation later.
Note: The orientation of the + of the battery is towards the power supplies or middle of the system.

Attention: When removing the battery, do not use a metallic tool to disengage it from its slot.
    CAUTION:
    • After removing the failed time-of-day battery, do not:
      • Burn or charge the battery (to avoid possible explosion as the battery contains lithium).
      • Throw or immerse into water.
      • Heat to more than 100 ⁰C (212 ⁰F).
      • Repair or disassemble.
    • Recycle or discard the battery as instructed by local regulations. In the United States, IBM® has a process for the collection of this battery. For information, call 1-800-426-4333. Have the IBM part number for the battery unit available when you call.
