Updating for Decision Runtime for z/OS

Assess the impact of the latest Decision Runtime for z/OS on your legacy applications, and then create your new working datasets and database tables.

Before you begin

When you upgrade, be aware that each release of Decision Runtime for z/OS is a complete installation with a new distribution structure. Keeping an installation of a previous version during the upgrade procedure can ensure that you deploy the most up-to-date version of your rule projects to the new product installation.

About this task

You might have one or more of the following artifacts in zRule Execution Server for z/OS. Back up these artifacts before you upgrade. Then, upgrade your test environments first, and your production environment second.

  • Working datasets
  • Work paths
  • CICS® work paths
  • A database for zRule Execution Server for z/OS
  • Various files if you use a FILE persistence

Procedure

To upgrade your applications, complete the following steps for all installations:

  1. Back up the <PREVIOUS_VERSION HBRWORKDS>.SHBRPARM(HBRINST) member, work datasets, and work path.
  2. Populate the <9.1.0 HBRWORKDS>.SHBRPARM(HBRINST) member, or a copied version of it, with the values from your previous version configuration.
    Note:

The HBRINST member from previous versions is incompatible with 9.1.0. There are many new variables to consider in the new HBRINST member, but copying your previous variable values from your previous version can help.

  3. Follow the configuration steps for your new environment to create the new working datasets.
  4. Back up all of the databases that are used for the previous configuration. These databases are dependent on your environment, and the configuration of your setup.
  5. Back up any files that you are using in FILE persistence. These files are found in the directory indicated in HBRFILEPATH.
