What is Db2 Performance Solution Pack for z/OS?

Db2 Performance Solution Pack is a set of components that help you optimize the performance of Db2 for z/OS® by monitoring, analyzing, and tuning all major aspects of system and query performance. The solution delivers expert advice that takes the guesswork out of identifying, diagnosing, and fixing performance problems.

Db2 Performance Solution Pack is a solution that supports a comprehensive and holistic approach to managing performance. The integration between monitoring and tuning functions minimizes resolution time in the most complex Db2 environments. If you currently rely on the skills of individual experts to resolve performance issues manually, you might be vulnerable to single point of failure scenarios. Db2 Performance Solution Pack helps you to avoid these types of performance issues by providing expert diagnosis and tuning capabilities to all members of your technical staff, even those with minimal experience.

Db2 Performance Solution Pack consists of the following product components:

  • IBM® Db2 Query Workload Tuner for z/OS (also referred to as Db2 Query Workload Tuner)
  • IBM Db2 Query Monitor for z/OS (also referred to as Db2 Query Monitor)
  • IBM Db2 SQL Performance Analyzer for z/OS (also referred to as Db2 SQL Performance Analyzer)
  • IBM OMEGAMON for Db2 Performance Expert (also referred to as OMEGAMON for Db2 Performance Expert)
  • IBM Z OMEGAMON Data Provider

Db2 Query Workload Tuner

Db2 Query Workload Tuner enables database administrators and application developers to optimize the performance of Db2 for z/OS SQL queries and to maintain that high level of performance over time.

SQL optimization is critical to maintaining a high level of application performance in a Db2 for z/OS environment. When SQL queries and workloads are not tuned for optimal performance, application performance degradation can put revenue at risk, reduce customer satisfaction, and increase infrastructure costs.

Db2 Query Workload Tuner includes two main components:
  • IBM SQL Tuning Services for z/OS
  • IBM Db2 Administration Foundation for z/OS

Db2 Query Workload Tuner also includes a license for enabling the extended tuning features of SQL Tuning Services.

The features of Db2 Query Workload Tuner and SQL Tuning Services, including the extended tuning features, can be accessed in:
  • The Db2 Administration Foundation interface in IBM Unified Management Server for z/OS
  • The IBM Db2 for z/OS Developer Extension for Visual Studio Code
  • Stand-alone REST APIs

Db2 Query Monitor

Db2 Query Monitor is a dedicated, low-overhead SQL monitoring tool that enables you to do the following performance management activities:

  • Collect, summarize, and display SQL resource consumption down to the level of the individual SQL text statement.
  • Collect, summarize, and display Db2 object access statistics down to the individual table and index.
  • View data from the perspective of a data sharing group.
  • View active SQL statements that are currently being run by Db2.
  • Capture the full text of long SQL statements.
  • View the expanded text description for an SQLCODE that is supplied by the IBM® utility program DSNTIAR.
  • View information about the Db2 commands that are run on monitored Db2 subsystems.
  • Collect information about SQL-related exception events.
  • Configure proactive notification to alert users of problems.
  • Automate actions to deal with exception events as they occur.
  • Access consolidated data and events for Db2 subsystems, whether within a single z/OS image or across multiple Db2 images, independent of the existence of a coupling facility.
  • View and configure monitoring across your enterprise from a single console.

Db2 SQL Performance Analyzer

Db2 SQL Performance Analyzer is an SQL performance analysis tool for organizations and IT staff who prefer an ISPF interface. It is the tool of choice for application developers who want to analyze one query at a time.

You can use features in Db2 SQL Performance Analyzer to optimize your SQL queries to find performance problems, do What if analysis, prevent expensive SQL from running, and product performance hints, and ISPF and batch reports.

OMEGAMON for Db2 Performance Expert

OMEGAMON for Db2 Performance Expert is a full-featured performance monitoring, analysis, and tuning tool that enables you to do the following:
  • Monitor and analyze application response time.
  • Optimize your Db2 subsystems.
  • Use snapshot history data to solve problems.
  • Analyze and tune buffer pools.
  • Collect and evaluate historical data for Db2 subsystems.
  • Analyze Db2 objects.
  • Use EXPLAIN information to tune SQL queries and statements.
  • Provide automatic notifications when problems arise.
  • Evaluate system metrics to identify exceptional activity.

IBM Z OMEGAMON Data Provider

IBM Z OMEGAMON Data Provider provides a full set of Db2 metrics curated by IBM OMEGAMON for Db2 Performance Expert on z/OS to various visualization and analytics platforms, such as IBM Instana, Prometheus (for use with Grafana), Apache Kafka, Elastic, and Splunk. IBM Z OMEGAMON Data Provider is a component available in Db2 Performance Solution Pack for z/OS and in Db2 Management Solution Pack for z/OS, but not as a stand-alone offering.

Starter dashboards for Elastic are provided to help you take advantage of these new observability options quickly. Each of these analytics solutions offers great flexibility in customization and the capability to combine data from multiple sources into single dashboards for 360-degree views of systems infrastructure and applications.
