Using architecture frameworks with UML models

You can model solutions and enterprise architecture using UML profiles and tools designed to comply with framework specifications.

About this task

By using the appropriate conventions and views, you can create models of complex system architectures to comply with the framework specifications that describe operational environments and their components. Participating IBM® Rational® UML modeling products currently offer enterprise architecture modeling support for the following frameworks:
  • Department of Defense Architectural Framework (DoDAF) version 1.0 specifications

You can use the DoDAF modeling feature to describe the architecture of a complex system. The DoDAF feature uses the Unified Modeling Language (UML) as a base to represent a system's structure in visual, textual, and tabular formats.

  • UML Profile-based Integrated Architecture (UPIA)

You can use the UPIA modeling feature to develop a comprehensive enterprise architecture, and to analyze, design, and deploy the systems that are needed to carry out the mission of the enterprise. As you refine the enterprise architecture in lower levels of the model, you can ensure that the service oriented architecture (SOA) being developed is consistent with the enterprise strategy.
