UPIA viewpoints
Viewpoints can help reduce clutter in the user interface by hiding the unused or unrelated items on menus and palettes. The UPIA profile defines over 150 element and relationship types. The UI components for creating these elements and relationships are logically divided into groups so that each group applies to modeling a particular aspect of the enterprise architecture. Each group has an associated UPIA capability and you can select a modeling viewpoint to enable a subset of these capabilities.
In addition to viewpoints that are predefined for UPIA modeling capabilities, you can use the Viewpoints page in the Preferences window to configure custom viewpoints for your UPIA modeling requirements.
The following table lists the five UPIA viewpoints, which each contain two or more UPIA capabilities:
UPIA viewpoint | Description |
---|---|
UPIA Enterprise Definition | You can use this viewpoint during the initial modeling of the enterprise architecture to define the doctrine and visions of the enterprise with any corresponding organizations and interested stakeholders. This viewpoint enables these UPIA capabilities: Enterprise Modeling, Organizational Modeling, and Standards Modeling. |
UPIA Operational Design | You can use this viewpoint when you design the logical structure of the architecture to define operational elements and performance criteria, as well as to associate standards with elements. You can also use this viewpoint to define relationships between the planning elements, such as capabilities, stakeholders, and projects, and the operational elements. This viewpoint enables these UPIA capabilities: Operational Modeling, Measurement Modeling, and Standards Modeling. |
UPIA Planning | You can use this viewpoint when the modeling is in the planning phase to define capabilities, their requirements, and configurations, along with projects, forecasts, and milestones. This viewpoint enables these UPIA capabilities: Organizational Modeling, Project Planning, and Strategic Planning. |
UPIA SOA Design | You can use this viewpoint when you design the high-level structure of service-oriented architectures to define service specifications, service ports, and service consumers and providers at both the operational and system levels of abstraction. This viewpoint enables these UPIA capabilities: Operational Modeling, Service Modeling, and System Modeling. |
UPIA System Design | You can use this viewpoint when you model the high-level implementation of the architecture to define system elements, communication ports, links, paths, and performance criteria, and to associate standards with elements. This viewpoint provides the tools necessary to connect the operational elements with the system elements. This viewpoint enables these UPIA capabilities: Measurement Modeling, System Modeling, and Standards Modeling. |
