Specifying relationships to UPIA elements in diagrams

You can use the relationship tools to create relationships between existing diagram elements and new elements that the relationship tools create.

Procedure

  1. In the Palette, in any UPIA section, click a relationship tool.
  2. Optional: To create a relationship between two existing diagram elements, in the diagram editor, complete the following steps:
    1. Click an element and drag the cursor to another element. A pop-up menu opens that lists the possible relationships between these two elements. If only one type of relationship is available, the relationship is created.
    2. If more than one relationship is available, select a relationship to create.
  3. Optional: To create a relationship between an existing element and a new element, in the diagram editor, complete the following steps:
    1. Click an element and drag the cursor to an empty part of the diagram.
    2. Click a relationship; then click a type of UPIA element to create. The new diagram element is created and is connected to the existing element by the specified relationship.

Example

For example, on a diagram that contains a project element, click the Project Planning Relationships tool, click the Project element on the diagram, and then drag the cursor to an empty location in the diagram. On the pop-up menu, click Create Project – Organizational Resource reference To > New Element: Organizational Resource. An Organizational Resource element is created that connects to the Project element with an association relationship.
