Creating themes for UML diagrams

You can modify and create new themes to apply to UML diagrams. You can also add additional elements to themes.

Before you begin

You must have a diagram open.


  1. Click Diagram > Themes.
  2. In the Themes dialog box, from the Name list, select a theme to modify. You can select a theme as a starting template or use the default to create a new theme.
  3. In the Theme, click an element and click the icon box.
  4. From the drop-down menu, select a predefined theme for the element or click New to create a new theme.
    1. Click New.
    2. In the Shape Appearance dialog box, modify the appearance of the element.
    3. Click Save As.
    4. Type a name for the Shape.
  5. Click Close. You can modify additional predefined shapes from the Name list.


Note: You can modify the appearance of an individual shape in the Properties view on the Appearance page.
