Comparing file contents

Use the LPEX compare tool to compare a file that is open in the editor to another file.

Before you begin

To set preferences for the compare tool, open the Preferences window and select LPEX Editor > Compare. For more information about the compare tool preferences, see Preferences - Compare.

About this task

In this procedure, the original file that is open in the editor is called the source file and the file that it is compared to is called the target file.

Procedure

  1. Open the source file in the z Systems LPEX Editor and click the Compare to a file Compare to a file toolbar button toolbar button.
  2. In the Compare File window, select a target file to compare and click Open.
    The editor displays file differences:
    • Lines in the source file that are identical to lines in the target file are displayed on a white background.
    • Lines in the target file that are different from lines in the source file are displayed above the source file lines on a red background.
    • Lines in the source file that are different from lines in the target file are displayed on a yellow background.

    The editor also adds a Compare menu to the pop-up menu:

  3. Use the menu items to navigate the file differences, to change compare tool preferences, to print a file difference report, or to clear the target file differences from the editor.
